One-Owner: 1976 Pontiac Trans Am

This 1976 Pontiac Trans Am is being sold by its original owner who bought the car new when he was a kid. Located in Belen, New Mexico, the Trans Am is sitting under a shed and is going to need some work. The seller states that the interior is full of dirt as can be seen in the photos but there are no photos of the interior. The seller does reveal that the driver seat has a rip but I would think it would be important to see pictures of the interior before bidding on this Trans Am. The car is currently bid to $9,700 here on eBay with 2 days remaining in the auction.

The rear passenger tire appears to be flat or sunken into the ground. The seller states that all four tires are dry rotted and will need to be replaced. Painted in white with a black interior, the car is said to be a 4 speed car with a modified 400 cubic inch V8 engine. The hood scoop reflects a later year T/A 6.6 call out instead of the correct “400” decal. The windows have dark tint and the car appears to be unlicensed.

The standard engine in 1976 was the L78 400 cubic inch or 6.6 liter V8 engine in the Trans Am. This engine was rated at 180 horsepower and developed over 300 lb ft of torque. A buyer could also select the optional L75 455 cubic inch or 7.5 liter V8 engine that was rated at only 200 horsepower. This was the last year for the 455 cubic inch V8 engine to be offered in the Trans Am.

This car has apparently been repainted because the hood bird is a 1979 version. The front spoiler is also broken off and the car is said to need a new battery and headliner. The seller states that the car does run and drive well and that there is some minor rust in some places on the car. There is bondo on the front fender covering where an antenna was once mounted.

Almost a twin to my late brothers car. Same color, also a 400/ 4 speed. It had ac though. The body on this one appears to be cleaner. I would assume since it is a NM car. Brothers was from gulf coast and the quarters were impossible to keep rusting through. He cut and replaced metal several times. He had his painted and used different decals as well. The originals were rather “loud”; had a lot of red and orange so he used one with maroon. They were from the same year though. The shaker should read “400” instead of “TA 6.6”. Ad mentuins interior full of dirt but no photos. I wonder if it had black vinyl like my brothers.

What did this car ever do to anybody that caused it to be treated so badly?

It’s just a touch hard to believe the claim that it “drives well” when the tires are DRY ROTTED INTO THE GROUND!! LoL, seriously, do people even read their own ads?

    I bought a 1976 T/A in 1978 with 21,000 miles. Mine was a 400 , with a 4speed. I will look indifference tomortow. #1 I noticed right away. Mine had “400” on the hood scoop. Not T/A 6.6.

The bondo on the fender can’t be from the aerial because GM products of this era had aerials embedded in the windshield. Sound like a rust issue to me
