Only Original Once: 1956 Chevrolet Nomad

56-nomad-3

Original but “complete”, this Chevrolet Nomad is in need of some help. This looks to be a recent unrestored find so it is in its original state. There is some rust, but overall this Nomad is a solid start for a project. Priced at $22,500, the seller is open to reasonable offers. Hopefully someone can reasonably acquire this Nomad. Find it here on craigslist out of Kettle Falls, Washington.

The engine bay still has its original 265 V8 and automatic transmission. The bay is a little rusty, but still mostly wears its original powder blue color. There looks to be some missing components, such as carb, air cleaner, and perhaps some other various items. There is no mention to the drivetrains condition.

56-nomad-1

Overall this Nomad looks relatively solid. The seller has mentioned rust in the rockers, quarters and floors. The floors are crispy, but appear to mostly be present. The trim is listed as being complete and from the photos it looks to be complete, and in decent shape. The bumpers don’t look to bad, the front bumper looks pretty good with mild pitting in a few areas. The rear bumper looks nice with minimal rust. There looks to be enough of this Nomad left to take on a restoration and not have to hunt down too many parts.

56-nomad-5

We don’t know if that is the original upholstery on the seats, but the seats look pretty reasonable. They do not appear to be rotted, making for great seats to reupholster. The dash looks to be in nice shape as well. Some of the pictures are rather dark making it a bit difficult to make out the condition of this Nomad. As far as the interior goes, it looks reasonable and restorable, though we see missing door panels, and the rear seat panels are rough.

56-nomad-4

This Nomad is no cream puff, but is solid enough for someone to warrant a restoration. Not 100% complete, but mostly complete this Nomad would be a great project. The price seems a little steep, but the seller is open to reasonable offers, and cash is king. The big question is, who is in need of a Nomad project, and what would you do to this Nomad?

Weren’t 265’s maroon, or is that Corvette only? Looks like a good project.

Nada valuation ranges from low retail of $20k to a high of $110k so this is already over retail for a vehicle in this condition, though there is still room to make a profit if that’s the goal, and you can do most of the work yourself. Way too rich for my blood!

I believe you are right about buying one finished! This one does need to be saved! A lot of people want one, it just how big the budget, how big are your skills, how big is your garage and how BIG is your years! Wish I was young again just for starters! Love those vehicles!!!!

Thats a lot of $ for the condition ,and these are really expensive to restore .I’m with Rotag999 ,cheaper to find one already done .But on the other hand Somebody out there with deep pockets needs to save this car.cuz it is verry kool.

A minor point but…. The advertisement doesn’t say it’s the original 265. It simply states it’s a 265. Which is correct for this car. Chevrolet didn’t start stamping the partial vin on their engines until the early sixties so if the date code is within reason it is no problem. I only mention it because a PO has cut the core support out. The only reason to do that would be to make an engine swap easier.

Ah I long for the good old days. 40 years ago I passed on a project like this. In running condition. For $800

I’d Love the chance to restore this Nomad. It would be great also to represent our little custom shop. I’d Love the chance to talk to you about it but I’m also quite a ways away. I’m in Huntsville,Alabama

36 years ago I sold two of these, in pretty much this exact shape, for less than $1500 for the pair. Back then something in this shape was quite nearly a parts car. I remember, and regret, tearing parts out of a 56 Chevy four-door hardtop. It had a factory padded dash and air conditioning. It was parked at the back of a used car lot in Montpelier, Indiana. My buddies and I laughed at ugly it was–just because it was a four-door. The owner let me take all I wanted off of it for $25 or $50. I sure
wish I could have a talk with my young self!
