Oregon SSP: 1988 Ford Mustang 5-Speed

This 1988 Ford Mustang is a genuine SSP vehicle, formerly doing duty in Oregon. It is one of those almost novelty-grade examples as it features a five-speed manual transmission, a feature that’s hard to comprehend ever finding its way into a modern police vehicle. These are special cars, arguably one of the more collectible Fox-body models ever made – especially when it has been kept in the sort of condition that closely resembles how the Mustang appeared when it was in service. Find this survivor-grade example here on eBay with bidding to $6,900 and no reserve.

The black steel wheels and dog dish hubcaps are a great look for this SSP, and the seller (and previous owners) have done a nice job of keeping it faithful to its original appearance. There are some modifications under the skin, but they’re good upgrades that don’t detract from its outside appearance. These include shorty headers/exhaust, 3.73 gears, and an aftermarket throttle body. The Mustang thankfully retains its must-have spotlight, but the lightbar has been removed; fortunately, the seller retained all of that original equipment.

The interiors of the SSPs can sometimes appear quite tired, given their intended use. Some of them escape hard lives because they lived in remote communities where daily poundings weren’t on the menu. This example hails from Oregon, where there are any number of regions up and down the coast or in the mountains where the Mustang could be blessed with a life of limited criminal activity beyond writing the occasional speeding ticket. The cabin is very clean, with no tacky aftermarket stereos added where there was once a scanner and CB.

The engine bay is extremely clean, with the must-have blue hoses that were unique to the SSP cars. The seller notes some mild issues, including the A/C no longer blowing cold and a pinion seal on rear end has a small leak (the gears are still quiet, he says.) The seller notes that there is no rust, and it’s as bare as it was when it was assigned to police duty – no radio, no power features, and no luxury beyond A/C. These cars will always be collectible while offering the kind of performance you can enjoy every day. I want one.

I really am starting to like these Notchback Mustangs. Looks like a fun ride, but those fat meaty tires are just begging for raised white letters haha :)

Replaced the gear and the now the axle leaks. I wonder about the quality of the work. Then there’s why? And how has it been treated since the modification?
