Originally planned as a local dealer option available in a single state in 1967, the Buick Gran Sport California was successful enough to justify a nationwide release. This particular 1969 model is an incredibly tidy looking example, and I have to thank Barn Finder FordGuy1972 for referring it to us. It is located in North Andover, Massachusetts, and is listed for sale here on Craigslist. The owner is asking $19,500 for the “California.”
The combination of Crystal Blue paint and a Cream vinyl top give the Buick a very classy look. The presentation of this particular car is first-rate, and the good selection of photos of the underside of the vehicle indicate that there are no rust issues with this classic. The original Rally wheels appear to be in good condition, and the Buick looks to be wearing all of its correct badges and exterior trim. Before we dig any deeper, you would have to admit that this car’s appearance and condition do make quite an impact.
Everywhere that you look in, on, and under this Buick, what you seem to find is just spotless presentation. This is especially true when you open the hood because everything in the engine bay is clean enough to eat off. The original 350ci V8 engine produces 280hp, which is sent to the rear wheels via the Super Turbine 300 transmission. This was the only combination available to buyers of the GS California, so if you wanted anything different, then you needed to look elsewhere. In addition, the Buick is wearing power steering and power brakes. The California has recently received new rear suspension, and the owner also says that the recently fitted new exhaust sounds amazing. The owner states that the Buick has covered a genuine 51,969 miles, and while he doesn’t mention any verifying evidence, the general condition of the car makes this claim entirely believable. Surprisingly, the other thing that he doesn’t mention is how well the car runs and drives. Huh…go figure?
The reality with the ’69 GS California was that the only choices that a prospective owner had to make were to choose their paint and trim colors. Everything else about the car was essentially set in stone. This included the vinyl trim and bench front seat. The interior trim of this particular California could easily be termed as flawless. I can’t see a single, rip, tear, split, or stain anywhere inside the car. The only thing that I find distracting is the wrap on the wheel. Still, if it protects the wheel and keeps it immaculate, that’s okay with me. From my perspective, I look at every aspect of this car, and the whole package just screams “careful ownership” to me.
This 1969 Buick GS California is just a nice looking car that seems to be in way better than average condition for an original survivor. It is a car where the next owner can simply slip behind the wheel, and enjoy mile after mile of classic automotive cruising. In 1969, a total of 3,574 GS Californians rolled off the Buick production line, and today they are quite a popular classic. Prices on the high side of $20,000 are pretty common for really good examples, and I think that this car qualifies for that status. That’s why I think that someone is going to snap this one up pretty quickly.
Personally, I always thought that this version of the vinyl top has an awkward transition in relation to the bottom of the rear window; as opposed to the “full” version. Other than that, it’s a fine looking “post” car, and I really like the underhood set up! It doesn’t state that the car has been repainted, but in looking at the underside back of the wheelwells, there is not a single chip or mark, or any evidence of 51k miles of driving, which is odd, but not a negative. I have noticed a few more Buicks like this around lately, the big inch Gran Sports came out of the closet so to speak back when the turbo GN was all the rage years ago.
Funny, a few people I knew thought they were either a strange looking Chevelle or Pontiac,….some of them people were well into their twenties when these would have been new.
It’s an insurance fighter really, just like some other cars that looked tough but had smaller engines. It’s nice, so nice in fact I wouldn’t enjoy driving it.
I had a friend back in high school that had a Gran Sport Colorado that would break the rear tires loose at 60 mph on the stock motor!
Maybe in a rain or snow storm.
I had a ’69 GS350 with the same 350/280 HP motor as the GS Colorado and though it ran well it would not come close to breaking the tires loose at 60 MPH.
What did the Gran Sport Colorado come with? Sounds like a bad ride.
I had one with a vinyl top in more conventional trim. Also a dealer-installed sweep down the fender and door. Love this car, but it was lumbering without the performance upgrades. I was driving a Rabbit GTI as my main car at the time. LOL :)

I had a friend in high school that had a GS convertible and it was one sweet ride!!! This car is immaculate!! A well taken care of car like this is going to get snatched up by a collector and never see the light of day!!! I really hope that’s not the case but when it’s this nice and original I have my doubts!!!
