Original Factory Half-Cab! 1966 Ford Bronco

If you are familiar with the U14 designation for a first-generation Ford Bronco, it means a factory half-cab or “utility pickup” body style. You can turn any standard Bronco into a half-cab, but a genuine U14 in the VIN number makes this one rare. According to the classic car insurer Hagerty, there were only 6,930 produced in 1966. This particular half-cab can be found here on eBay with a current bid over $24,000. Located in Jackson, Mississippi, this Bronco looks like a great driver. In fact, the seller uses it as a daily driver. Take a look!

The interior appears in great condition and is mainly stock. It appears that the 4wd shifter lever has been extended, but other than that, it looks factory fresh.

The engine is a 170 cubic inch straight-six that the seller drives daily. You can tell it has been taken care of and preserved. The ad says it features power steering and has been upgraded with power disc brakes. As said before, the transmission is a manual shifted on the column and although this combination won’t win many drag races, the torque produced by the straight-six will get you just about anywhere you want to go.

Overall, the condition of this Bronco looks really nice. The seller does point out a couple of blemishes on the body. One is near the key lock, which is probably due to keys and/or a seat belt getting shut in the door. A little bit of work and they should be able to be blended pretty well. So, what do you think about half-cab Broncos?

    It looks really nice in the pictures. Whoever added the power disc brakes and steering made wise upgrades. Spending the extra money and buying a car/truck in this condition is much smarter than purchasing the typical basket case.

    Looks like a pretty nice rig! The power steering and power disc brakes will make it easier to drive for sure. The 4WD shift lever hasn’t been extended – the majority of the ’66 shifters were that long.

    I like this. Very basic early half-cab, in good condition. A nice example of what the Bronco started out being. Not that it got all that fancy through its model run, but this one is true to its roots (the power steering and brakes notwithstanding).

    I haven’t driven anything with a three-on-the-tree in…. decades. But like I told my grandson who is learning to ride his bike, “after you get the hang of it, you will never forget how to do it.”

    Nice Bronco but they are way overpriced (my opinion), a V8 would be a better choice to me.

    Naturally, I’m flabbergasted at the price, BUT,,,the half cab 1st gen Bronco is extremely rare. They catered mostly to service stations that plowed driveways, kind of an alternative to the CJ, by far the most popular. The Scout was never a contender, not in my parts anyway. They led rough lives, and rusted terribly and very few remain. We (I) may hem and haw about the price, but the fact remains, THIS is what the Bronco was all about and apparently, I can understand that makes it worth a fortune. Very nice example, regardless.

      Funny you mention the CJ, the gas station I worked at in my teens had a half-cab Jeep with a Warn plow, the pickup box in the winter carried the old Generac gas generator we would use for jump starts. I took the Jeep to the parts store one time and speed shifted it, and promptly popped the clutch cross shaft off it’s ball studs. Called the boss on the CB, he said drive it back. I said how? “Put it in first and start it, shift it at the normal speed” First time I ever shifted without using the clutch. When I got back he said something along the lines of “doing some speed shifting?” I of course said no… he laughed and then told me the frame had a slight twist and with a quick stab on the clutch pedal it pops off. We pushed it onto the lift, used a pry bar and popped it back. Starting it in gear was fun, talk about whiplash… But back to the Bronco, beautiful Bronco, I hope the seller gets top dollar, this thing is beautiful.

    I have an original 67 half cab!! This one is much nicer than mine since mine has been a workhorse since the 70’s!! It’s rare to find the half cab with a 289 cause it had to be ordered that way!! But I certainly wouldn’t mined driving this around!!!

    When I saw the picture, I had to find where it was from. I worked at a Ford dealer in ’66, and this is exactly what they had and used for a parts runner, until a farmer bought it for his farm. This is my all time favorite Bronco, set up just the way it is.
