The Pontiac Trans Am was one of the many factory street machines competing for dominance during the horsepower wars of the late 1960’s and ’70’s. Before the Trans Am package was introduced in 1969, Pontiac introduced the Firebird in 1967. Very similar to the first generation Camaros, the Pontiac Firebird was meant to compete with the Mustang while not taking away sales from the Corvette. This 1968 version is located in Richland, Washington and is for sale here on Craigslist with an asking price of $16,000. Said to be an “original owner” car, it has a list of engine upgrades and is said to be “ready for a paint job”.
The ad claims this car is an “original owner” Firebird. There is not much else in the description to shed any light on the details of this cars history. Did the current owner truly buy this car new? Is it a “one family” car? If there is provable one-owner provenance, I would think this car is worth more than the asking price, depending on the condition. The seller would benefit from getting a PHS (Pontiac Historical Society) information packet detailing the VIN information, options and originality of this car.
The engine is said to be a 350cid with Muncie 4-speed transmission. It was said to be rebuilt a couple years ago with all new gears. The engine is bored .030 over with a “nice cam”, headers, MSD ignition, remote oil filter, push button start as well as a four link rear suspension. If this is truly a one-owner car, why doesn’t the seller have a better description and more photos in the ad? Along with the PHS documentation, better photos and more info. would benefit the seller also.
(After about $20K in rust repair) it’s ready for a paint job!!!
A friend of mine bought one that could be this ones twin in super nice rust free condition, had all new suspension installed, a built 400 with a 4 speed trans. He got it at a little out of the way car dealer for 16K and it needed some motor work to fix previous owners screw up but he’s a gearhead and did the work himself and it’s a real nice car and fast. The feature car is over priced because the body needs too much work before paint.
He must think it’s a Camaro, $10,000-12,000 if he’s lucky.

always liked these better than their camaro cousin. had an auto 68 400 convertible and if it had been a clutch i would not have been able to drive it as there is not enough room.
Of course there would have been room. Clutches and manual transmissions were sold in thousands of them. You must mean something else.
So if it’s a one owner car it’s worth more. Unless it isn’t? Gotcha. Wait no I don’t.
Wouldn’t it have had a 326ci motor?
For 67, the v8 options were 326 or 400. For 68, they upgraded to the 350 option, with the 400 option still available. But the Pontiac 350 is a heavy engine, completely different than the Chevy 350.
There was a teacher at the local high school who owned a green/black top ’67 that he bought new and drove for many years,last time I saw it was at a local garage awaiting some repair work,surprised that it had the 326/stick shift combo,always wondered if he still owns it though,also my P.E.teacher in 7th grade owned a ’67 Firebird convertible in blue with a white top,only about 3 or 4 years old at the time and to a pre teen car nut it was just so cool!!
Unless you plan to return this to factory specs having the PHS docs and one owner verification are a moot point. Looks to be a typical for the era go-fast toy, bid accordingly.
Seller would greatly benefit by washing the dam car before taking photos!
If washed you could see all the rust better.

Install an aluminum manifold and headers and it’s a wash..
So many contradictions in the description. “All original”, then lists all of the modifications. “True barn find” but says the engine was just rebuilt a couple years ago. The body looks good though. All the guys saying there’s a lot of rusty must be looking at a different car.
