Original Owner! 1969 Ford Mustang SportsRoof

Stored since 1994, this one-owner 1969 Ford Mustang in Rohnert Park, California comes to market as a running and somewhat driving classic. Make no mistake:  this green machine needs a thorough once-over before hitting the road for the first time since the Clinton years. Anyone wanting to wow the neighbors should bargain on a host of cosmetic work as well. A gas tank and carburetor have it running, and $2200 of brake work from 2014 should have it stopping sure and true, assuming the tires are still made of rubber and not some time-morphed facsimile substance void of strength and grip. Every other system probably needs attention on the claimed 73k one-owner pony. The listing here on eBay has at least seven bidders sparring for the honor of restoring this dusty Ford. Bidding over $17,500 should delight the seller, as finished non Mach1 ’69 and ’70 Mustangs in OK condition trade in the mid-20s. Thanks to Russell G. for spotting this highly original SportsRoof ‘Stang.

Despite a newer Holley carburetor, the 351 cid (5.8L) Windsor V8 looks utterly stock, and the buyer gets the original carburetor too. The VIN on eBay looks like a random mish-mash of numbers, so that’s not encouraging, but the H-code two-barrel 351W made 250 HP and the higher compression M-code four-barrel made 290 HP, both hitting the sweet spot between more frugal I6 and 302 cid mills and the decidedly performance-oriented 390 and 428s. That said, you can build a 351W to 350+ HP with a modest investment, and the sturdy C6 automatic (when in good shape) can handle that power for years.

What look like replacement seat covers clash slightly with the more faded original plastics. If this car only covered 73,000 miles, the seat covers *could* be original, but it seems unlikely. The bright circle on the brake pedal indicates front disk brakes. When I was a little tyke, my Uncle had a similar-looking Mustang in maroon, also with the steel wheels and dog dish hubcaps. The ’69 SportsRoof Mustangs are one of my favorites for sure.

Years ago I enjoyed a quick trip in a hopped up ’99 Mustang GT in this car’s home of Rohnert Park, outside San Francisco, California. Thirty years younger, the SN95 ‘Stang boasted a modified motor with long-tube headers and a complete coil-over suspension for additional fun and danger. If this ho-hum ’69 got the resto-mod treatment with additional power and handling, hardly anyone would shed a tear. What’s your top dollar on this long-parked middle-of-the-road driveway find?

Got to be the ugliest Mustang I’ve ever seen. Green and dirty. Disguise it as restomod with a decent paint job and you might have something worthwhile.

Well this does seem like a reasonable straight forward project; the body lines look straight, interior is in good condition, everything looks to be there, and it is a fastback. Hotrod the engine up a lil bit. New rubber maybe rear window vented louvers and a rear spoiler and of course a new paint.

As the saying goes you would 30k into awesome 15K car

A wash and a set of Magnum 500 wheels would increase the visuals of this car immensely.

I will bet you most of the bidders are looking this as a Dynacorn substitute. Tomorrow’s Mach 1 or Boss 302!

I like the fact that it’s not a Mach 1. Nice car.

I’ve been looking for a 69 non-Mach1 sportsroof for years and they are extremely difficult to find. And those that are out there usually carry a pretty hefty price tag, regardless of condition.

A tuneup, age appropriate Cragars and tires and a repaint looks like all she needs, IMO. Love those 351s and maybe it has more life left before a rebuild. In its present state she’s pretty homely.

I wonder how many ’69-’70 fastbacks are left with the straight 6 motor.
I thought the C4 was used in 302 cube & smaller motors.

C-6 behind a 351 Windsor is not Factory in 1969.

Who cares if 351 and C6 wasn’t factory, it’s age appropriate and badass

But had much rather have an updated Tremec 5 speed manual behind that 351

Article says C6, could easily be wrong though, it may have the original FMX in there

For all those moaning about the dirt, the ebay ad shows the car after cleaning. I’m not a Ford guy per se, but this car has a ton of potential! Compare it to the 64 1/2 Mustang fastback featured here.

No doubt, I’ve restored a few first Gen Mustangs and this 69 has alot going for it, and is in better shape than some that I brought back. As far as I can tell it only needs just cosmetics. Hopefully that 351 is still running well.

Clean it up and keep those dog dishes. Splurge on a set of red stripe tires and have quite the look!
