Parked in 1989: 1967 Chevrolet Impala Hardtop

This 1967 Chevrolet Impala Hardtop is a one owner vehicle that was parked in 1989. The original owner recently passed away, so the family has decided to part with the car. It appears to be a solid contender for restoration but looks like it could be mechanically revived and driven exactly as it is. Located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, you will find the Impala listed for sale here on eBay. Bidding has reached $4,450, but the reserve hasn’t been met. The owner does say that the reserve has been set low, but there is also a BIN option of $16,000.

After three decades in storage, it was no surprise that the Impala was pretty dirty when it emerged into the light of day. However, you can see how a simple wash has transformed the appearance. In all honesty, I’d love to take to the car with a decent polish, because I think that it would come up surprisingly well. The owner refers to it as being 99% rust free, because he can’t find any rust, but can’t ever guarantee that there isn’t any somewhere that he has missed. The only things that I can really fault are the missing trim off the door on the passenger side door, and a couple of small dents in some trim items, such as the trim above the tail-light on the passenger side. The rest of the car looks to be quite good.

As with the exterior, the interior of the Impala has held up quite nicely. I’m not sold on the seat covers, but at least they seem to be free of rips and noticeable wear. We can’t see the dash pad, but the rest of it looks to be in the sort of state that you would expect for a pampered car of this age. Apart from the seat covers, the rest of the interior appears to be original, with no aftermarket accessories or additions. Once again, it looks like it only needs a bit of a clean, and it would be ready to use. Personally, I would be inclined to replace the seat covers, because, to me, they are out of character with the rest of the car.

The good news continues under the hood of the Impala. This is a full, numbers-matching car. What you get is a 327ci V8, a 2-speed Powerglide transmission, power steering, power brakes, and air conditioning. The owner says that the car runs and that it has an original 80,000 miles on the clock. The mileage claim is certainly conceivable given the number of years that the car has been in storage, but it would be nice if the owner does hold some documentation to verify this. The fact that it runs is also a huge plus, but as the owner does say, it will need some new fluids and a good check before it is ready to hit the road once again.

When you look at this Impala, it really does look like a great project car. It would look pretty impressive with some light restoration work, but there doesn’t appear to be any reason why it couldn’t be given a clean and polish, a thorough mechanical check, and then be driven as it is. That would give the new owner a chance to refer to the car as an original survivor, and that sounds like a pretty tempting idea to me.

Add 2 more doors and it would be perfect
for a Supernatural clone. The car on the
show is also a 327 V-8 and automatic.
Nice car, but not what I’m looking for.
Anyone can own a 2-door HT, but a 4-door? Now that’s really something!

The seller claims original 80,000 miles, that would be only 3,600 miles per year before the car was put away in 1989. It’s possible, but the seller needs to prove it. If there is no documentation provided then the condition of the car speaks for itself.

It’s convenient he’s selling it for family friends, that’s a nice way to skip paying to transfer the title and jack up the price of the “1 owner” car. This is a common scam, it save the seller money while simultaneously increasing the price of the car. It also shields them from any potential issues the new owner may face registering the car, since their name doesn’t appear on the paperwork.

Some sellers are honest, others aren’t, those that are, will back up what they put in their ad with documentation. If I were interested in this car I’d want to speak with the owners family and, at a minimum, ask for pictures or to speak with someone that had first hand knowledge of the cars history.

80k miles and yet someone has spray bombed under the hood at some point? Doesn’t sound like something Grandma would do….

And speaking of backing up claims, I have to ask why there aren’t any underside pics, inside trunk pics.. Clean out the stuff, clean up the car, take all kinds of pics on a nice, sunny day. If ya wanna sell it, show it. A picture IS worth a thousand words. This would be an inexpensive way to get started in the restoration/modification/upgrade hobby. But, not for $16,000.00. Bidding is at $8,100.00 as of my reading. I think that is about tops for this one. I was almost tempted. In 1967, I think Chevy had 5 V8 engines available: 283, 327, 350, 396 and 427. The 400 may have still been around. Not sure. So this one has one of the two smaller mills available, coupled with a 2 speed Power Glide. Not much “get up and go” here. I feel this price is pretty ambitious.

In 1967, Pontiac was just getting started with their 400! As far as the bowtie “may have still been around” makes no sense.

first thing would be to get the chrome strip missing from door, would that be easy to source. Add some bolt ons to the motor, e.g. extractors, better carb, and maybe convert to 4 speed manual on floor. Polish and it would be very cool

I’m not a big fan of coupes, but this one has nice lines. That said, $16k?? Dream on. That much scratch will buy you into a nicer ride that’s ready to drive & enjoy. Cut the asking price by 50% and you’ll move the car along to it’s new home a lot faster

Dovi65 hit it, really nice 67 but way too much $$$. Might be the BJ syndrome. Good luck to the new owner.

Hagerty puts this vehicle around $8K, and this isn’t even a rag top. I would flash $4000 cash take it or leave it. Some people are so greedy.

    Nice car.

Has two things that are great

2 dr HT and beloved 327

Otherwise pretty plain jane. NADA says worth 13 grand mid range.

I say 8 grand tops because it will need fluids changed , hoses , tires , etc

Adam, the car looks like it’s got a lot of potential for little effort and some reasonable dollars to get it really right but the acquisition cost is too high. My sense is that to really do it right the new owner would be in the car at its current market value.
But if you like the car values don’t matter. Just drive and enjoy.

Anyone who doesn’t live in eBay every day must think that just because the Buy It Now is high, they can bid low (auction-style) and come away with a deal for less money. Don’t be fooled…nothing could be further from the truth. The seller wants pretty close to $16k!!!! Don’t be fooled into thinking you are going to get this car for $4000. As far as polishing this one out and driving it….I dunno a white car with faded red vinyl roof and hideous SuperFly red interior doesn’t do anything for me!

While others may squawk about it being a 2 speed auto, I always liked the Powerglide transmission. They were super durable and this 327 should have no problem with it performance wise.

I had a yellow with with white interior and no vinyl top when I was 16, the car was ten years old at the time. You’re correct about how the combination of the 327 and Powerglide was quite respectable.
