Parked Since 1993: 1970 Plymouth Road Runner

The owner of this 1970 Plymouth Road Runner purchased the vehicle in 1983 and then drove it before parking it in 1993. It has sat parked indoors ever since, but he has now decided that the time has come to part with the car. If you want to grab hold of a classic piece of motoring history, then you will find the Road Runner located in Spangle, Washington, and listed for sale here on eBay. Bidding for the Road Runner is currently sitting at $10,200, but the reserve hasn’t been met.

The Road Runner has undergone a repaint at some point in its life, and in my opinion, it really hasn’t done the car any favors. It started life finished in Ivy Green, and this would have made it a very attractive car. There are some rust issues to be addressed, and while we have no information on the general state of the floors or frame, what is present doesn’t appear to be particularly horrendous. There is rust in the lower quarters, the trunk floor, the battery tray, and a small amount just beginning to appear at the bottom of the rear window. While a significant amount of the external trim looks quite reasonable, the rear bumper does have some damage, while the front one will need a trip to the plater at some point.

With the Ivy Green paint to contrast against, the original white interior trim would have really stood out. The original seats have either been replaced or fitted with new covers, so fixing this will be the new owner’s starting point. New carpet will also need to go onto the shopping list, while we don’t get any real indication about the state of the rear seat or headliner. The dash pad looks like it is crack free, while the door trims have been cut to fit aftermarket speakers. There is also an aftermarket radio/cassette player fitted into the dash. So, there’s a bit to be done to return the interior to its former glory.

There are a few words and expressions which seem to elicit a strong response from our Barn Finds readers, and these include words like “patina,” and expressions like, “will buff out,” and “ran when parked.” Sorry folks, but the owner does say that the Road Runner did run when it was parked, but we must remember that this was 26-years-ago. Today we don’t really know the state of the engine or any of the other mechanical components. On the plus side, this is a full numbers-matching car, so you do get the original 383ci V8, and the original 4-speed manual transmission with the pistol-grip shifter. Hopefully, it won’t take too much work to kick the Road Runner back into life.

I will admit that this 1970 Road Runner is going to need some work before it is able to once again cruise the country’s highways, but we have definitely seen cars that are in worse condition than this one brought back to life. There is some promise hidden in this one, and it will just need the right person to take it by the scruff of the neck, and whip it into shape. Will that person be one of our readers?

The seat look to be out of a GM product. I’m thinking Pontiac, but I’m not completely sure.

The shackles, Cal Custom foam wheel and air cleaner are sweet! This is some righteous ’70’s kit! I am really fond of 1970 Road Runners and GTXs, but this has every appearance of becoming very expensive, very fast. I’d have quit bidding at this point.

If this was cheaper I’d love to take it and make a Superbird clone out of it. Petty Blue with #43 on the doors etc. That way I could drive it around and thrash it guilt free.

Yup, over $10.000 is ridiculous, I sold a 70 in around 1990 in better shape with an Air-Grabber, buckets and console it had a 400, but ran well. I got around $800 to 1000. I saw it on the road a couple years ago, with the same primer I put on it. It kills me to see what ppl will pay for these now-a-days, it blows my mind.

It’s all gold to be restored to someone’s private collection and never see the road again and be polished in a corner to gawk over!!! It makes me sick!!!!

What a bunch of pathetic negative whiners….is this what Barn Finds has succumbed to?

Sounds like realism. The reality that the party is soon over and no one wants to be left around in the morning to pay for the messy clean up. Time to leave the party and watch from a safe distance. Only the foolish stay at a party until the bitter end.

What party are you talking about? Try responding in something other than allusions…sounds like your dancing around an answer without answering it because you’re afraid of the answer…spit it out.
