Parts Runner: 1964 Corvair Rampside

rampside

One of the more unusual factory pickups I’m aware of is the Corvair Rampside. Featuring the GM air-cooled flat six cylinder in the rear and an unusual side door to the bed as well as a “cab over” design, this is certainly not your typical 60’s pickup. This one is located in Boonville, Indiana and is listed for sale here on eBay, with a buy-it-now price of $7,500 and bidding starting at $200. I was encouraged when looking through the pictures to see what I think is a Corvair van also in the seller’s barn/garage, so hopefully they are an enthusiast. The seller says it’s not perfect but very driveable and characterizes the paint as “not professionally done” and that it needs dents and dings fixed, although the body is solid. The truck has also just had new carbs and tune up components installed, and the ad says it will get a new muffler shortly. I think this would be a cool truck to make parts runs with!

Not that straight. But otherwise seems to be in good condition. When you drive one of these-you will not be seeing others like this on the road. Very unique-even when new.

It is a positive to have a pickemup that has a built in ramp.A ramp that can’t be forgotten or lost. But the long flat bed of a traditional pickup may be missed. Perfect for picking up something heavy-but not too long—like a snowblower.

A gentlemen at a local car show here has a yellow one of these in perfect condition. They are unique in design but as stated you may miss the flat bed of a standard pickup, but that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t like to have this little truck but at no higher than 5K.

It has the VIN listed as a KY #, which is not the Vin assigned by GM but a number assigned by the Kentucky DMV when you do not have a title so some reason. I know this because I have a 1940 Chevy with the same type of VIN. Still legal, but it has to hurt the value somewhat.

back when these were new a company in my area used them for a welding service. had a complete setup in the bed. they did a lot of on the farm work but would stop by on their way in or out of town to do work for the car dealers. i think this truck needs a lot of work. other pickups in the BIN price range. interesting find

Keep in mind that the extremely low production of the 1964 Rampside ( I think 851) makes this one much more than your average parts runner. Hopefully, it still has it’s 164 ci engine and related parts. If it is what it is, better to restore it and use it “carefully”!

I always envision one of these having the ramp drop open while driving and taking out parked cars or people crossing the street etc. I wonder if it ever happened?

The multiple dents on the outside of this particular ramp suggest that there were actual issues with using the ramp. Most probable was the likelihood of the owner dropping the ramp on a ground surface that isn’t flat and causing damage to the ramp. Usually this would happen when the vehicle was stopped-but if it was still moving when the ramp came down–that would be something!
