Cheap 1968 Pontiac GTO Project!

Ikey Heyman has brought us another gem that needs some love but could also be considered untouched! This 1968 Pontiac GTO is located in Clover, South Carolina near Charlotte. The GTO is listed here on craigslist for $4,000 but maybe the seller would take less. The engine is said to have been last started two years ago. The car is said to be a true one owner car and is sitting on a lot with some other interesting vehicles in the background.

The seller states that the car has its original engine and a 3-speed manual transmission. Since the 3-speed manual was the base transmission option, it is likely that the engine under the hood of this GTO is the 350 horsepower 400 cubic inch V8 engine. The interior of the car will need a complete refurbishment and the dash looks like the back of an alligator due to the cracks from the sun. There isn’t a whole lot of other information in the ad and only 5 pictures. We wish there was a picture of underside and underhood shots in order to fairly evaluate the car.

One of the cool things about the 1968 GTO is that it was one of the first cars to have a front Endura bumper that was painted the same color as the car. Several other manufacturers would copy this design. A buyer in 1968 could order their GTO with an “Endura delete” option. If this was ordered, the Endura bumper was replaced by a chrome front bumper that was the same as was available on the LeMans. As is evident, rust is a concern and this car is covered in surface rust on every panel.

Check out the way the rust has eaten away the chrome on the rear bumper. The GTO was awarded the Motor Trend Car of the Year in 1968 and over 81,000 cars were sold that year. This car is listed at $4,000 and it doesn’t look picked over. Is that a good price?

$4000 ..well if the frame isn’t rotten and the engine is complete..I’d get it running and take it to car shows just like it is.looks like something from vice grip garage episode

Get your head out of the 1970’s. Really? This is not rust belt car. If the frame and floors are decent, this is a bargain.

Personally I think the GTO lost its true visual Pontiac identity with this model year on – to me these are just too similar the other A-body cousins. Its biggest asset must be it’s already a stick car.

I understand it’s a matter of preferences, however I’d probably be more eager to have a closer look at the ’62 ‘pala sitting next to it

I ,d check things out on it. Get it running and go from their. You could spend double what he is asking and still have a better made car. Then any new one built today , I had one with a 400-his and her shifter. Had really good power, easy on gas and comfortable to ride in. Plus have fun driving it. My brother almost crapped his pants riding in it with me one day. He asked for it.He asked me how good it ran and I showed him.hahahaha Wish I had the money to get it.Good luck to who ever does and I hope the floors and frame is in good shape.

Interesting bunch in the car lot. The primer grey Nova, same color Chevelle, and what looks like a faded burgundy Chevelle remind me of a high school parking lot in the late seventies/eighties. Many were “in progress” project hot rods the way I remember it.
As for the fabled GTO, well it was nice at one time or another as all these cars were, and it most like will again. Nothing fancy, just a cool driver/local show rig.

For $4000 for a complete GTO I don’t think this is a bad price at all!! The price should be at this rate considering the time and money needed to make it right!!
