Pedal Faster! 1960s Charger

pedalcar

No, it’s not a Dodge! Thanks to Robert R for this unusual Barn Find! I’m actually feeling quite silly, but not for the reason you might think. I had purchased an old pedal car very similar to this to restore for my daughter, but she outgrew it before I completed the restoration. I sold it a year or two ago for less than 1/6th of what this one is advertised for and it looked a lot better! Located in Cynthiana, Indiana, and for sale here on craigslist for $150, this true barn find benefits from one kid pedal-power and still sports its original graphics, albeit a little the worse for wear. Serious surface rust means that this one probably needs a full restoration; I don’t think clear coating over the patina would quite work.

This is pretty close to what it should look like, although the windshield on the one for sale could add a whole $5 to the sale price! I know a lot of car enthusiasts have fixed up cool pedal or push cars for their children or grandchildren; how about posting some pictures of yours in the comments?

What, no pics of the undercarriage? Any rust in the floorboards?

I wanted to do 3 of these for my granddaughters but they like the musclecars have gotten to be stupid priced. Heck I bought them the electric Mustang Kiddie cars for cheaper.

Over the years I had a few of these old pedal cars and my last was a fire truck with side mounted ladders and a bell proudly mounted on the hood. Sold all of them without any problem for a fair price at the time. I sold just a windshield on ebay a couple years back and it brought more money than what I paid for some of the cars.

Jamie, I knew you would “get it”. Thanks for the write up and thanks to Jesse for the posting. Gary, I too, had one of the fire trucks with said bell and ladders. Great fun, and no batteries.

The Murray Charger pictured in this blurb sold for the asking price, rust and all.
I have a red fire truck with two side ladders and a bell (if you’re looking for another barn find feature.)

i had one when i was little. it was new when i received it but soon had roadrash on both side and dents all over. i blame it on poor brakes, getting behind on the steering, jumping curbs and a nice size hill! i might have played demo derby also. did the same thing with pedal tractors and tri-cycles. great find.

    1966 Sprint Edition Mustang

In January of 1966 my wife’s parents bought a brand new Sprint Edition Mustang. In 1973 it was her first car. Somewhere around 1977 it left the family. By the early 1980s Pops was looking for a Mustang to replace the one that got away. He found a beauty—Emberglow with a Pony interior. He restored it from the ground up and drove it on weekends and sunny days. It came to me in the early 1990s and was used as a daily driver for 10 years. During that time my kids got their learners’ permits and drivers’ licenses and on special occasions, including when my son was dating the girl who would become his wife, they were allowed to drive the Mustang. Pops got to missing it again and it went back to him around 2002. He freshened it up after ten years of near daily use, and it resumed its role as a fair weather friend. It finally left our family last year.

We found out earlier last year from our son and daughter in law that we are expecting our first grandchild in September. So when we saw this rusty old piece of junk in Round Top this Spring, how could we resist?

Our kids may complain that they didn’t have anything like this when they were young, but we have the answer–

“It’s too nice for children, but nothing is too nice for grandchildren!”

I love reading everyone’s wonderful stories about their pedal cars! I have one I’m about to sell and I know nothing about these cars. Can someone tell me what I should ask for it? It’s very rusted, and I don’t see how to post photos here…
