Pickup Project: 1957 Chevrolet 3200 Pickup

When you look at workhorse vehicles that are as old as this 1957 Chevrolet 3200 Pickup, you generally see a vehicle that is quite battered and bruised, with plenty of dings and dents which testify to a pretty hard life. This particular Pickup is a little bit different, because it is remarkably straight, and also appears to be nice and solid. Located in Audubon, Minnesota, you will find the Pickup listed for sale here on eBay. Bidding is currently sitting at $1,350, but I’m not surprised that the reserve hasn’t been met. There is a BIN option available, and this has been set at $5,900.

The Chevrolet really is a surprise, because any dings on the vehicle, such as this pair on the front fender, are really only minor. It looks like there is some rust present in the trailing edges of both fenders, but even that doesn’t look to be particularly bad. Although there are no photos to back the claims, the owner does say that the floors and cab corners are nice and solid. The timber in the bed has rotted, but all of the glass looks to be quite good.

The interior of the Pickup is basically complete, and the first thing that I spotted was the factory radio fitted to the dash. That’s a nice little bonus, and it looks to be in good condition. The cover on the seat is ripped, but it would be quite feasible to throw a blanket over it and to drive the Pickup with the interior as it is. Having said that, I would be very tempted to restore the interior, because everything just looks so good.

It isn’t clear how long it has been since the 3200 has run, but I get the feeling that you might be able to measure the time in decades. The original 265ci V8 is said to turn freely, while the transmission is a 3-speed heavy duty unit. With just a little bit of luck, it might not take much to get that engine to live again. However, there will almost certainly be plenty of other work to do before this old girl is ready to hit the road again.

It was only a few days ago that I had the chance to see one of these that had been revived from a barn find. It was largely original, except for some slightly wider rims, and it had been finished in a dazzling shade of red. It just took my breath away. Given the overall state of this one at present, the potential is certainly there for it to be able to do the same. We’ve seen a few of these Pickups in recent times here at Barn Finds, and this is probably the most solid and straightest of them. It looks like a pretty reasonable sort of project vehicle.

Like CW McColl, I like ’57 Chevrolet Half-Ton pickup trucks. But this is obviously priced above the ‘hide-a-bed’ and thirty-five bucks. Equipping these with a V8 from the factory is a rare occurrence indeed. Seeing it at 62 years of age with the original engine is rarer still. I’d love to give it a try but some major changes coming up are forcing my hand in the other direction…

May have been a factory V8, but I’d suspect this isn’t the original 265. Has later air cleaner, looks like a long water pump (came out in 69), hard to tell but looks like 350 style valve covers. Not all bad, 265 parts are getting hard to find, if it’s a later small block your local Advance or Napa probably will have the usual parts ( if the 20 something partsman understands what a ballast resister or choke pull-off is). Relatively cheap way to get into an old vehicle.

Man, I was just tell my wife I am buying one of these in a few years when I’m closer to retirement. I hope they’re still around at this price. The buy it now is cheap….and it has a stick and V8…so bummed I can’t do it now…

That’s a h*ll of a rear bumper. Cuts down on tailgaters.

Very cool old pickup! I understand that it’s straight, solid, and a V8. But for $5900, I would need it running, and definitely would need a title in hand! The ad states that they have applied for a clear title and it should be here in a few weeks. Depending on the state you’re in, getting a title is like an act of Congress. And when, (or if), you get it, the title will be bonded for the next 3 years. Makes me wonder why if we’re talking about a few weeks, why the seller did not wait to have a title in hand before listing it. Might be more to the story than what they are letting on.
