Plain As Jane: 1960 Rambler American

5

From Barn Finds reader Patrick C – I just found this plain-as-Jane classic but it looks so complete that someone could have an easy daily driver. I bet that paint could buff out into a decent peach and I’ve heard that Ramblers, as plain as they may be, were good cars. Some rubbing compound and love are mostly what this one needs (floors are a minor detail; insignificant, really). I have to agree with Patrick on this neat find, I don’t think this one would require too much to get it back on the road. And while the seller describes the floorboards as rusty, there’s still enough metal there to weld something to. The seller seems to have an honest idea of what the car is worth, because it’s listed for sale here on eBay with a buy-it-now of $1,500 and even lower offers being entertained. The Rambler is located in Spokane, Washington, if you want to plan on taking it home with you! And if your name IS Jane, please don’t be offended!

    Well, that sold quickly!

Was going to say, my uncle owned one very similar to this which my Father borrowed for a trip to Minneapolis one day. He said it drove nice on the road and WAS A FAST CAR! (Not that my father had any experience with muscle cars to base his opinion upon!) ^_^

I like these! Met a guy years ago who had one that looked factory-fresh, with shiny Mouse Gray paint. The only thing that looked odd were the tires, which were a bit wider than normal. But when you lifted the hood, it had a sbc, attached to a GM auto. trans. Very neatly done! As a finishing tough, he had had the “Nash” script etched into the rocker covers.

I’ve always wanted one like it.

Rambler was riding high around this period. These weren’t exactly rare, there were a bunch driving around Milwaukee in the ’60’s. I had a friend that had one just like this, only a “Super” ( automatic trans.) You pulled the shift lever towards you to start it. ( not sure if the stick was like that) I remember the gas pedal was bent in a U shape from it being on the floor all the time. He beat the heck out of it, we painted it all kinds of crazy colors, and he junked it. At the time, NOBODY thought of saving a Rambler American, and it’s amazing to see one today. Buyer got a good deal here.

i drove one of these, in this color, back in the 1960s. i found the manual steering to be very slow and easy to get behind on. other then that the car was tank. i think the only thing to kill them was rust or wrecks. great find.
