Pre-War Beater: 1941 Buick Special

1941 Buick Special

Sure, it’s a four-door and a little rough, but there’s a lot to like about this 1941 Buick Special. It’s almost 75 years old and appears to be very original. Supposedly the car sat in storage for 30 years before the current owner cleaned up the fuel system and got the straight eight running again. The brakes still need attention as I’m sure a few other systems do, but if the rust is as minimal as it looks, this could be made to be a runner on the cheap. The seller has had a hard time moving it, but perhaps someone here will appreciate this Buick enough to preserve it. The car is located in Worthington, Iowa and is listed here on eBay where the auction is ending shortly. Anyone in the market for a pre-war beater?

mmm? Me thinks the war started in August 1939, at least that’s what our mother said led to the conception of twins – my much older brother being one of them. OK, OK, he’s only twenty minutes older!.

This car has a lot more potential than the Caddie CVT

You’re right, but the States didn’t enter the war until the end of 1941, so automobile production wasn’t affected as early as in Europe.

Must be an early 1941 production car. I believe the last ones in 1941 production had “blacked out” non-reflective trim after America entered WWII. This would be a great highway cruiser. After this many decades being a survivor, I’m hoping nobody restomods it… >_<

Actually, it was the end of the run of 42s that had no chrome trim. Early 42s were normal cars. Pearl Harbor took place 7 Dec 41 and auto production ceased the end of Jan 42.

There were a few 42 cars made before production was shut down.

I believe that they made some of these into staff cars for the military, I believe that some of the military surplus cars came out after WWII and got painted black, but still had OD Green underneath.

clean it up, replace the rotted rubber parts, put in a dual master cylinder and wheel cylinders and brake lines, tires, and you can drive it at 70 MPH all day, one of the few non luxury pre WWII cars that could do that. I would put in seat belts and drive it to meets and parades and not even think about winning a Concours but enjoy it.

Awesome car! I’d do exactly what Charlie says and drive it as-is!
