Pretty Kitty: 1968 Mercury Cougar

cougar

This nice looking, largely original Cougar is located in Hammonton, New Jersey and is listed for sale here on eBay where bidding hasn’t met reserve at $200. With only 53,530 miles, fresh paint and a really nice original interior, this Cougar really looks the part. I was surprised to find that it had air conditioning (although non-functional at the moment, it has been converted to R-134A) and no rust to be seen. I like the clean look with the original wheel covers and the skinny whitewalls. The interior is truly stellar, with the dash top looking so nice I have to wonder if it’s been replaced. Even the carpet isn’t faded, and the back seat looks as if it’s never been sat in. Underhood and trunk doesn’t look bad either. Are you willing to take a chance on this pretty kitty?

You can clearly see the seams on the tops of the inner fender aprons in a couple of the underhood pics. Distortion where these overlap due to rust starting between the panels is extremely common, but they look great which is a very good sign.

Agree that this could be a great driver, especially with some minor mods to the engine, and some discs up front. Looks nice enough to show IMO if the paint is a nice as it appears. Glad they stuck with the factory color.

At 7K now and still hasn’t met reserve, very nice car, I would be happy to give it a home beside our Mustang in it’s climate controlled garage. I would even move the mower and weadeater / blower to the shed.

Nice shot of the gauge cluster which I think Karl asked about swap ability to a Mustang, there is no way even with some crafty mods you could make that gauge cluster work in a 68 Mustang and make it look like it goes there.

If you swap the dash pad, instrument cluster, the short center dash face, and the right side dash face as a group you can use the Mustang dash in a Cougar, or a Cougar dash in a Mustang. It may also require some wiring work depending upon which parts are used due to differences in the instruments and options.

This car looks great, but like previous posters, some chassis shots are needed for me to make a final judgment of if to jump into the bidding or not. One thing that is not OE specs are the carpet and the dash pad. This car would have come with color keyed carpet and dash pad. That small detail does not matter much.

@ Charles, curious — are you looking at the carpet mat they put down on the driver’s side as carpeting? I was, too, at first glance, that’s why I’m asking. Thanks for letting us know that the dash pad has been replaced. I couldn’t see how it survived if original!

The carpet is blue like the interior. The driver’s side has a dark floor mat on it.

Sharp and clean.. It also appears the odometer has been worked on. I am from this generation of cars and if the odometer is untouched, original to the car, ALL the numbers will line up perfectly.. Also, the top of each shock tower has a flat black paint run on the front surface.. Mercury would never have allowed that cosmetic flaw out of the factory due to this being a higher end car. All that said, I’d like to own it..

In the sixth picture, what is that brass colored object laying on the brake pedal?

@Jimmy — that’s actually the handbrake handle sticking out from the dashboard — I recognize it from Mom’s ’67 Mustangs.

I don’t see anything out of the ordinary on the brake pedal.. Just the chrome surround trim..
