Project Coupe: 1959 MGA 1600 Coupe

It has been reported that 11,378 left hand drive North American 1600 units were produced in 1959. This one is located in St. Louis, Missouri and is listed here on craigslist for $4,750.

This unit appears to be a good base and/or start to a Coupe project.  The seller says this car has a “nice straight body ready for restoration” and it appears to be so.  The buyer may need an engine, gearbox, floorboards, bonnet (hood), seats, door-cards, front bumper and maybe a radio to complete this project?

The car has been in a long term dry storage.  It appears the buyer will have all five wire-wheels for this project. This maybe also be someone’s stalled project that you can pickup and finish.  The glass that we can see does appear to be in good shape.  Don’t the Coupe’s lines look good?

We know there are some BF reader’s who are MGA Coupe “experts”.  What do you think this project is worth?  Do you need/want this one?  We do know that there is at least one BF reader that is looking for a Coupe, is that you?

Motor-on,
Robert

YUP! I really want it. I don’t know that you were referring to me but I have been looking for one of these. I like the drop top MGA as well but really prefer the look of the coupe. There is a small dealer just down the road from me with one that sits out back but i have not asked what he wants for it. I will have to find one that’s priced lower than most for me to make a move. I don’t expect much for what I hope to spend and this one looks like a solid place to start

Had one in the 1970’s. Love it. Will always be looking for another, it actually had roll up windows and a great steering wheel. But a dead stop was required to first gear, and really not that much power. But those lines and the wrap around rear window really set it apart from the convertible.

I was under the impression that just over 10,000 Coupes total were made and sold worldwide, so I think the 11,378 LHD North American units mentioned is way off base. Also thought the 1600 cc engine was offered from 1960 0n and not in 1959.

The numbers are correct.they start installing the 1600 engine late 59. I have one with the 1500 engine.

This is not a 1600. Front drum brakes indicate that its a 1500 as do the shape of the rear tail lights. Without a motor and gearbox this guy is kidding himself……
