Project or Parts Car? 1968 Dodge Charger

In 1968, the success story over at Plymouth was the Road Runner, a new budget-minded muscle car that sold like those proverbial hotcakes. At Dodge, the big winner that year may have been the Charger, which – with a new body – went from sales of just shy of 16,000 units to more than 92,000 in just 12 months. The seller’s car enjoyed the 1968 resurgence but looks pretty well used up today. Very little of the body doesn’t have rust or some other damage and the machine is far from complete. But if you have your heart set on rebuilding one of these automobiles, it’s available in Oak Ridge, New Jersey, and here on eBay for $6,500 (you can make an offer). Thanks, Larry D, for bringing what’s left of this Dodge to light.

I’ve never read a good explanation as to why the then short-lived Charger went from near obscurity to overnight sensation in the late 1960s. It no doubt has to do with the popularity of the redesigned B-bodied intermediates at Chrysler and more aggressive marketing on the part of the Dodge Boys. This Charger was a rather ordinary edition when new, with the small block 318 cubic inch V8 paired to a TorqueFlite automatic transmission. Thousands of them left the factory like this in a variety of colors.

According to the seller, this Charger has been sitting for more than 25 years, and – from the looks of things – that storage has been outside. As a result, there isn’t any square inch of the sheet metal (and undercarriage) that isn’t going to need work or replacement. Parts galore have been pirated over time, like the hood, one of the doors, and most of the interior and glass. The seller admits the best parts of this car may be the dash VIN and fender tags. There aren’t new replacement bodies being made for Chargers though, so we wouldn’t recommend removing either of the tags from this body. Thankfully, there are companies stamping out every panel needed to fix this shell if you are up for the task.

The engine is missing its valve covers and likely other things and there is no knowledge as to whether this is a numbers-matching project or donor car. It did have factory air conditioning at one point. Given its location, buyers should be aware that vintage cars like this from New York State have no titles, just transferrable registrations. The car rolls mostly freely (well at least three of the wheels), so you can give the man some cash and haul it home for your own projects. Who remembers the days when you’d have to pay someone to carry a car like this away just to have it gone?

You’re right I thought it was a joke also. What a rust bucket and did somebody actually pay $6,500 for that? They would have to pay me $6,500 just to take it away! 😂

Ive seen worse on this site. This could be a good candidate for a patina job. Too bad someone has already robbed the firewall and dash of components. looks like someone sprayed the entire car with clear including the back seat. Someone probably has most of the parts to put this back together in their garage. Put it back together, get it running/driving, and the die hard fans of “68 Chargers will be envious and want to buy it from you for a restoration.

This *was* a parts car already. Everything of value has already been removed. You’d be further ahead to spend $65,000 on a completed car rather than $6500 on this, and if you can’t afford $65K, then you can’t afford this one, either.

Just a 318 Charger that was stripped out for parts for a big block cousin – when things like the blower motor are gone you know its been really stripped. the car is in a junkyard so either they picked it up from someone recently who used it as a parts car, or its been sitting way back in their yard for years. Looks like they took a steam cleaner to make it look a little better…if thats possible

The MOPAR fanatic’s stepped up and gave the seller the cash! He’s laughing all the way to the bank.

This has been a parts car for some time and some one has taken all the parts he needed and now wants his money back.
I would not touch this one even if he paid me to haul it off. Anything of any value is already gone.
