Project Package: 1968 Dodge Charger R/T

1968 Dodge Charger RT

Lately I have been dreaming about that new Hellcat, so it should come as no surprise that I have also been browsing around for old Mopars. This 1968 Dodge Charger R/T may never sound like a scalded cat, but with a 440 Magnum under the hood it is still an impressive machine. Especially when you consider that it is nearly 50 years old! The previous owner had this one for around 30 years, but a few parts have gone missing so a 383 parts car is included in the deal. The photos provided in the auction listing are blurry so it is difficult to access the condition of the car, but from what I can see, it does look like a good starting point. Some new parts are included too so if bidding doesn’t get much higher this could be a fair deal. This project package is located in Martin, Michigan and is listed here on eBay with about a day left to go. So, for 60 grand, would you rather restore one of these or just buy one of those new supercharged screamers? Hmm. That’s a tough one…

My main question is; why has it been parked since 87. Also, why doesn’t anyone that claims matching numbers, ever take pics of the engine/ trans numbers?

The original muscle car any day of the week. You can have the new ones, they don’t do a thing for me.

I’m with Craig and Jim. Take the original every time!

There is something special about honest, computerless. As an extreme example, I have driven an original Ford GT40 and the “new” version that came out some years ago. The old one was rough, noisy, had neither an audio system or a/c, both of which were standard on the “Ford GT.” The new one was pretty nice, but the old one was thrilling.

Maybe I just like distributors, carburetors, and a minimum of government interference.

Mopar muscle, there is nothing like it. The rust I see is fixable. This should be a good project.

Ed, what’s special about Chyrsler muscle cars? I don’t know a lot about them.

QuestionMark: Bigger engines for one thing. GM mandated that midsize cars would be limited to 400 ci motors. That is not to say 400 ci did not make a lot of power. Over at Chrysler, anything that fit would be put into any car. The 426 Hemi and 440 ci engines were the biggest performance engines early in the game. GM lifted the restriction late in the game.

I must be getting old. Not one “General Lee” comment ( I know, theirs was a ’69) Looks like it was pulled from a swamp, but still, these Chargers bring big money sometimes, but it’s just the same old thing. Do you put a ton of money into this or buy one already nice for probably the same amount. A quick check on Hemmings reveals, 2 ’68 Charger R/T’s. 1, 440, @ $74,900 and a hemi @ $139,000. ( almost double for the hemi) Definitely a market for them.

@DonC – That could be because we listed it back in 2015. Go to the homepage to see our most recent listings.
