Project With Style: 1936 Hudson Terraplane Pickup

If you’re looking for a project this Hudson Terraplane pickup may be a great candidate. The 1930’s Art Deco period produced some great iconic styles, especially with the automobile industry. This Terraplane pickup is a nice representation of that style. Located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, this Hudson pickup is available here on eBay. Bidding has reached a little over $10.5k, but the reserve has not yet been met.

Terraplane was a brand of The Hudson Motor Car Company from about 1932 to1938. The Terraplane was an offering of light-duty commercial and lower priced vehicles like this 3/4 ton pickup. Hudson was well received at this time for their combination of the fine styling lines of a passenger car with the functional work ethic of a truck. This Hudson is listed as being partially restored with the frame having been powder coated and the sale is supposed to include “hundreds” of original parts for the project.

The engine is there, but it looks like there’s still plenty of work left to be done. This is the Hudson Power Dome Terraplane Six which was the standard in-line six engine with 212 cubic inches producing 96hp. Overall, this truck looks to be a promising project. Some of the work has been done and the body looks to be basically solid. One challenge might be to make sure that there are no missing parts to complete the build – this seems to always be an issue with a purchase like this where there’s been disassembly of the vehicle. Good news is you can complete the truck in just the way you like.

Vintage pickups have become very popular and a hot commodity on the market today. For some additional details on these Hudson trucks, there’s an interesting article here in Hemmings about the 1936 Terraplane cab pickups. Does the style of this truck start your engine? I think this truck is a good candidate for a factory correct restoration, but what do you think? Here at HETclub you can find more good information and support from the Hudson-Essex-Terraplane Club. Let us know what you think of this stylish truck project.

Up past 13 large. The primer scares me but this is sooo cool, it has styling cues from the terraplne car which is very cool. Restore with stock mill or warm it up with something bigger?? Stilll hasn’t hit reserve. Good luck to the new owner!!

Yeah it is a work of art. How many modern vehicles could hold a 50 pound tire and wheel on the fender?

When I lived in Las Vegas (until 2015) there was a guy who owned one of these, dark blue and restored with some mild custom touches. Very cool looking and whenever I saw it at a show, there was always a crowd around it. Very cool truck.

Do not know if they were ahead of their time and realize most pickups were strictly for work in those days but there should be all kinds out there to restore. In the middle of restoring a 53 Dodge Pilothouse and would gladly trade and even do the delivery and pickup!! Great truck!

I believe the Terraplane truck was advertised as a “Gentleman’s” truck. Automobile comfort and styling and pick up utility. Always wanted one of these!

Owned this 47 for years and drove it daily. 1/2 ton Chevy truck underneath, 350 cu 700R4 OD trans, AC and all power options. Sold it to a buddy of mine who had for 10 years and then he sold it to a Grand Prix racer from Finland. Now it’s probably the only Hudson pickup in Finland!
