Promising Project: 1969 Dodge Charger

This 1969 Dodge Charger is a project car that is essentially solid and is just looking for the right person to return it to its best. There are a couple of minor items that aren’t original, but these could be replaced if the next owner is searching for complete authenticity. The Charger is located in Adairsville, Georgia, and is listed for sale here on eBay. Spirited bidding has pushed the Charger to $17,400, and with the reserve now met, it looks like the owner is about to receive his wish of seeing the car head to a new home.

Finished in Hemi orange, the Charger originally featured a black vinyl top. This is now gone, so we can see if there were any problems hiding under it. The top looks fairly clean, while the panels and rockers also look solid. The car was optioned with a luggage rack, and I can’t decide whether or not I like it. The floors have limited rust, and this might be able to be addressed with patches rather than wholesale replacement. The trim and chrome look pretty reasonable, so as the basis for a restoration project, this is looking quite promising.

The interior isn’t looking that flash, but at least it is complete. It is here that we find one of those non-original items that I referred to earlier, and it is the bucket seats. A previous owner removed the original seats and has fitted a set of 1968 model seats. Still, it may be possible to locate an original set, and since the front seats will both need covers anyway, it isn’t going to cause a major inconvenience. It looks like there might be an aftermarket stereo fitted into the dash, and there are certainly speakers fitted into the rear parcel tray. The door trims and console look good, so apart from seat covers, it looks like the shopping list is going to extend to a dash pad, carpet set, and a headliner. One nice item is the inclusion of factory air conditioning, but it isn’t clear whether this blows cold.

The best news is saved for that moment when we lift the hood. What you find under here is a 383ci V8, 3-speed D32-Code heavy-duty automatic transmission, and power steering. What makes this combination even better is the fact that this is a numbers-matching car. The only non-original item here is the air cleaner, but that should be easy to fix. The owner says that the engine runs and sounds strong, but there is some work to complete before the car could be considered to be a driver. He suggests that the fuel tank could do with replacing, while the brakes will need to be gone through. If that’s all that is needed to make the old classic a driver, then that really is good news.

As a project car, this Charger holds a lot of promise. The next owner is not going to be facing an overwhelming list of metal that will need to be replaced due to rust issues, while the car is close to being completely original. It is for these reasons that the bidding has been so strong. So, who wants to join the bidding party?

How did and orange 69 Charger make it this long without the following modifications?

    1. “01” on door
    2. Rebel Flag on roof
    3. Front pushbar
    4.CB antennae on trunk lid
    5.Dixie horn
    6.”Hurrican” wheels
    7. Someone to ride shotgun with me and yell “yeeeeeeeeeeeeee haw!” as I jump everything in sight

Someone with taste owned it, that’s how.

I would say there is definitely value in this ’69 Charger based on bidding activity alone. While removing the original fender tag is risky in terms of the possibility of losing it, in this case it would have been beneficial in doing so.

I’d go for the cop car behind it too! It’s probably all beat up but it’d be a fun rebuild if it’s not TOO far gone and had the history to go with it (any stories from any of the guys who may have driven it).
Please-NO GENERAL LEE mods to this decent looking Charger! That crap is waaay old and ridiculous.

    I want the police car!
    Brand, year???

And we got it all right here in America, home of the Chrysler 440 cubic inch engine.

The police car in the background is a 1968 Dodge Coronet.

Could be that’s Boss Hogg’s fuzzmobile, maybe they finally caught the Duke boys traveling incognito without said Rebel Flag on roof. Maybe you could make a package deal. Cop Engine. Cop Brakes. Cop Transmission.
Good luck to the new owner!
    Cheers

Classic styling never gets tiresome and these Chargers had it in spades. I don’t care for the luggage rack, and personally would’ve liked to seen a non matching numbers 440 under the big hood, but I’m being picky. Nice ride.

I could not read that rusty fender tag.

That kind of turns me off. Seller should have decoded it.

This ìs not worth even half what its bid up to.

What are the cuts in sided of the roof sail panels on both sides ?

I’d like to know if the luggage rack is a factory option, dealer installed, or aftermarket.
I’ve never seen a Charger with one before.
