Rare 1LE Package: 1994 Chevrolet Camaro Z28

In Camaro speak, the 1LE package is perhaps one of the more enthusiast-driven offerings that Chevrolet has offered on its predominant muscle car. I say that with the disclaimer that it wasn’t a pure horsepower boost; no, it had much less to do with that and more to do about sharpening the Camaro’s points edges even further. The suspension was firmed up, the comfort features list reduced, and the horsepower levels maintained at their highest stock levels. In the case of the 1994 cars, this meant the venerable LT1 powerplant paired to a six speed manual gearbox. The seller’s car is one of just 135 offered that year and is listed here on craigslist for $25,000 with several additional modifications listed.

The 1LE in 1994 meant that buyers got stiffer, progressive rate springs; a beefy front sway bar; upgraded control arm and panhard bar bushings; a solid rubber transmission mount; and the removal of power windows, air conditioning, and T-tops. That may not seem like much, but it represented a package that meant a lot to SCCA racers and high performance driving event participants. Those upgrades were the type of improvements they would often make, at the expense of the factory warranty. The seller’s car is not only a genuine 1LE, but it’s also a fairly low mileage example with just 27,557 miles on the clock.

Now, it’s obvious based on the photos that it has been upgraded significantly beyond what the 1LE package offered, and the seller sounds just like the individual I described above. They have used the Camaro extensively in Solo 2 racing and he notes that it has garnered several top finishes at the national level, and has been featured in Grassroots Motorsports magazine. The modifications list is extensive, with everything from a balanced and blueprinted LT4 to adjustable racing seats to a quick-ratio steering rack. It’s been built into a dedicated track car, with equal emphasis on increased performance, weight reduction, and improved handling.

The engine also features a cold air intake; larger throttle body; retuned ECU; BBK headers; Centerforce clutch; an aluminum driveshaft; and a G92 close-ratio transmission that the seller promises will do 74 miles per hour in second gear. Overall, this is a rare Camaro that was produced in exceedingly small quantities, and the seller has made all the right improvements to enhance its track day credentials even further. Would you have modified this ILE Camaro or left it bone stock?

Just to clarify, G92 is the RPO for the performance axle ratio. I’m pretty sure MN6 is the code for the 6-speed.

That whatever-it-is on the back has to go. Really, couldn’t they have put a color-matched spoiler on the back instead??

The rear adjustable spoiler is for racing on the track. It can be adjusted at many different angles. This is a track car which can be driven on the street. This Camaro is a hot set up. Good luck to the next owner. 🇺🇸🐻🇺🇸

It may have seen extensive track time, but that rear spoiler is pure Ricky Racer. Do Solo 2 cars really need such a spoiler or was it intended to attract a crowd at car shows?

Who manufactures that rear spoiler and what is the real gain in downforce with that setup?

What difference does it make if it’s a rare 1LE if it’s been so extensively modified?

Because it’s not a car intended to be collected. It was built specifically for SCCA racing. I don’t race, but my guess is that if it’s stock and you race in a stock class, the winners naturally have a short shelf life as racing technology advances. I remember in ’95 the 5.8 Cobra R came out specifically to take on this car. So it doesn’t take long until you are racing something outdated in a stock class. Then you modify and change classes with what you have to you can compete.

1994- A friend bought an 1LE to compete in SCCA events. While it was to be a dedicated track car, he decided to drive it on the street for awhile before modifying for it racing. The car constantly over heated and the dealer was baffled. Finally after a few beers, the owner noticed that the cooling fan was running backward. Easy fix and then he was off to the races.
