Rare 4WD: 1971 Jeepster Commando SC-1

This is a 1971 Jeepster Commando SC-1 located in Dallastown, Pennsylvania. If you are not familiar with the Jeep Commando, it was produced from 1966 to 1973. A total of 57,350 Jeepster Commandos (C101) vehicles were sold from 1966-1971. This one is well used but could be restored. It is listed here on Craigslist for $5,000 and has been listed for 3 days. We appreciate T. J. for bringing this one to our attention.

The Jeepster Commando could be ordered with the optional Dauntless V6 engine and a GM Turbo 400 automatic transmission. This one appears to be original and, if so, it was rated at 160 horsepower in 1971. The engine developed 235 lb ft of torque from the factory. The drivetrain on these vehicles were known to be reliable. The seller states that it runs but only one brake is working. The fuel and brake systems will need restoration before this one is reliable enough to drive.

The interior is worn but looks original and unmodified. The dash pad seems to be in excellent condition. Most of the Jeepsters came with an automatic transmission. The seats are soiled and should be easily recovered. The seller states that the body needs to be restored but the frame is solid. The pictures seem to indicate otherwise. I would take this statement to mean that there is some rust and rot on the lower body panels. I am not a Jeep enthusiast so I don’t know how popular these rigs are.

The Jeepster Commando was available in three different models: The Revival Jeepster, Commando Convertible and an open body roadster. The Jeepster was developed by Kaiser-Jeep and production was continued even after AMC bought the company in 1970. The name “Jeepster” comes from the Willys-Overland Jeepster that was produced from 1948 to 1950.  There were somewhere between 300 to 500 SC-1 models built in 1971 making this Jeep somewhat rare. I wonder how many have survived.

That’s a crusty mess of a Jeep, won’t say it’s not possible to repair, but why?

The special color for the SC-1 was Butterscotch Gold.

not sure what the sc model is (not a jeep fan but for the cj8 w/Alaska Postal rather than typical scrambler livery). These do very well w/a small lift’n bigger tire. Probably rather have this than the bronk on today’s same home page (even w/40 yr ownership ofa ’70 bronk). Off to go view it nxt/now~
