Rare Golf Yellow: 1976 BMW 2002

Regardless of whether it’s a round taillight or square taillight, the color “Golf Yellow” will always be a crowd favorite among some members of BMW’s dedicated 2002 fanbase. This example is rough around the edges but surprisingly sound in some typical trouble spots. It’s said to be a longtime Nevada car now for sale in California, listed here on eBay with bidding over $1,600 and the reserve unmet.

Yes, some enthusiasts will only go for the small-bumpered roundies, but the color is the selling point for me. Like the later E36 M3, I’d consider a slightly tatty example still wearings its original Dakar Yellow paint. Likewise, Golf Yellow in original condition should help potential buyers overlook its sun-ravaged interior and ugly big bumpers. The rear light reflector appears to be missing, but that’s an easy fix (or should just be eliminated entirely).

The seller mentions a few times that this is one of the most rust-free 2002s he’s seen, but that the penalty for the dry Nevada air is that the interior is a bit rough. Door panels are damaged or missing entirely, and the cloth seats will need re-doing. The carpets also look pretty tired, but a fellow 2002 owner parting out a rusty example will sell the correct used carpet for reasonable money. This 2002 is equipped with the original Behr A/C system, likely a dealer-installed option.

Engine-wise, the 2002 remains in stock form. The seller is a bit vague on running condition, as he notes the four-cylinder is lacking drive belts and that the center support bearing is making noise (the latter is a common issue among vintage BMWs). He also adds that it drives well, which I’m not sure is even possible if the belts have been removed. All that conjecture aside, this is a desirable rust-free 2002 wearing one of the lineup’s iconic colors, and bidding is low enough currently to make this one to watch.

If I read it correctly, it’s only missing the A/C belts. Other than the spare tire wheel well area, it looks rock solid!

I’ve always loved the 2002. I like both the circular rear lights of the earlier models and the more rectangular lights of the later models.

This one’s gonna need a LOT of work to be “nice” — besides the seat covers being shot and the headliner ugly, etc., the dash is also totally toasted. But, assuming the engine is running well as advertised, it could be a good “clean ‘er up and drive ‘er” 02 if acquired at a decent price.
