Rare Reef Blue: 1993 Ford Mustang LX Convertible

This 1993 Ford Mustang LX convertible checks quite a few boxes, from its rare color combo of Reef Blue paint with a black top and gray cloth interior, to its sensible performance upgrades and manual transmissions. When it comes to Fox bodies, color schemes can play a big role in the price one can ask for their car, especially if it’s not the typical red or white that so many Mustangs are ordered in. This 1993 model not only has the unusual combo of Reef Blue with black top and dark gray interior, but it also comes with the preferred manual transmission and under 60,000 original miles. Find it here on craigslist for $13,500 in Phoenix.

Thanks to Barn Finds reader Rex M. for the find. To me, this Mustang represents a perfect middle ground for the type of collector car we should all be buying. It’s not a time warp, or a never-driven low mileage specimen. Those cars cost too much and you can’t actually drive them, anyway. Then, there are the ones that are too damn cheap and don’t stand a chance of appreciating because they’ve been poorly modified or neglected, or both. This Mustang comes with some baked-in rarity courtesy of its factory color combo, and is a true survivor given the original paint and low miles. But the seller has made some tweaks that should make it a fun driver while still appreciating nicely.

The improvements are subtle, and while not necessarily incredibly sexy on the outside, they all certainly combine to make this Fox body convertible an engaging driver without being obnoxious. The seller has added a three core aluminum radiator with twin electric fans, which should certainly help this Mustang run cool in almost any climate; a 135 amp alternator; rear disc brake conversion; 373 gear change; and finally, a Flowmaster exhaust. Again, nothing out of this world, but taken together, the sort of improvements that can make driving a Fox body far more enjoyable. The Mustang’s interior remains in nicely preserved condition, and I’m pretty confident that dark gray upholstery is one of the rarer colors.

The engine bay is nicely detailed, and reveals one more tweak: an apparent “cold air” intake, but it’s just an open element filter that likely draws in a fair amount of hot air. There’s plenty of actual cold air induction systems available for this engine, so I’d change that pretty quickly once this car was in my possession. It’s really the only questionable aspect of the whole car, and sort of surprising considering how “tight” the rest of the Mustang is. Oh well – that’s an easy fix, and hardly offensive in the grand scheme of things. Great colors, (mostly) smart upgrades, and low miles – a Fox body you can enjoy often and likely still see the value tick upwards.

This is a great looking car at what appears to be a really good price. It should sell quickly.

I have a friend that had a 93 LX hatchback with the same color exterior and a dark grey leather interior. He bought it right out of high school when it was a year old. He loved that car and kept it in phenomenal condition until his house burned down three years ago.

Great color! Just wondering, where are the windshield wipers? I know it rarely rains in Phoenix but, I’d hate (for many reasons) to get caught in a downpour without them…the car probably isn’t out on overcast days anyhow.

I also like to see the less-popular colors. Nice car. I agree with Jeff, this one hits the sweet spot between too-low mileage (reluctant to drive it) and too-high mileage (worn and needing repair). If the new owner is judicious with the miles and takes care of the car, it will remain in good shape and keep its value.

A “Fox” body you can enjoy? An oxymoron if there was one. If you gotta have a “fox”, at least pay what they’re asking here for a 2005-2010 edition. The body is a lot better-looking and most of the Fox platform remains.

There are plenty of folks who enjoy their Fox Bodies. It is one of the most popular “collector” cars in the current market.

The 1994-2004 models did retain much of the 1979-1993 Fox underpinnings, but are sufficiently different that they are considered a different generation.

The 2005 model was a completely re-engineered car.

Better-looking is in the eye of the beholder. I happen to like …. both of them.

You’re right, it’s a tricky color. The first pic in the craigslist ad, with the light shining on it, is most representative. It’s not the minty-green Calypso Green of that year, and it’s not the Teal seen on the Cobra, and not a blue either. Very attractive color, in my opinion.
