Rare Trim Survivor: 1979 Chevrolet Carmaro Z/28

1979 Carmaro Z28

This 1979 Camaro Z28 is claimed to be a rare combination and an old promotional car. The listing states that the car has a Willow Green interior, green stripes, and that it was used to promote the International Race of Champions. For $7,975 you can make this car from Cave Creek, Arizona yours. The car has 78,000 miles, a clear title, but no VIN listed. Thank you, Roger, for the tip. You can view more here on Craigslist.

Powering this Camaro past 78,000 original miles is a numbers matching 350 cubic inch, four-barrel V8 with an automatic transmission. The car also has power disc brakes, front and rear spoilers, sway bars in both front and back, and the rear louvers. According to the listing, the engine does start and idle, but because it has been sitting for so many years, stored away, the seller recommends a proper look over before taking it on the road.

Inside is the Willow Green interior, consisting of a pair of bucket seats with a center console. The dash is fitted with a tachometer and original gauges. It also has power steering and air conditioning. It has spent its entire existence in the New Mexico and Arizona area and has the original build sheet included. The car is still rolling on the original color-matched wheels and the seller notes that the paint is original.

Nowadays, there seems to be a niche market interested in press and promotional cars. Considering the condition and features of this car, the asking price seems to be quite logical. It might be worth negotiating though due to the fact that it isn’t quite street-worthy, but it shouldn’t take long to get it there. It would also be neat to find out the story behind this car and any photos or marketing materials it might be in.

Per Barn Finds rules, I am not allowed to repeat the name I typically use for this car’s interior color. I know that different can be a great selling point, but that color combination is a little too “out there” for me.

So it was used to promote IROC and it’s an automatic? Makes perfect sense to me!!!! I give up…

As predicted, the usual negative comments …

Oh no ! Green interior, seats need repair, 350 TH auto trans…IROC benefitted, so did Chevy in later years (1986-90 IROC)

Not my favorite, yet I appreciate that it was kept alive through the absolute toughest times in U.S. automotive history. By 1982, the horsepower wars resumed and has only increased every year since up to today.

Camaro/Firebird carried on a tradition that may well have been lost. Great to see Camaro, Mustang & Challenger by the late 2000’s back with a vintage look and fast as ever ! Disappointing to hear Chevy is killing the Camaro …again (?)

Look up the history yourselves and have at it !

Nice work by the BF staff as always !

And the IROC series began in 1974. Camaro’s were used from 1975-80 and again from 1984-89.

For the price, there’s potential here. Straight body, little to no rust. This car is a decal package and interior color change away from a very nice car with room for profit it that’s your goal. Do a top shelf brake job, add a set of new tires and it could be a nice first car for a youngster who appreciates old school rides. Lots of options here for the money IMO.

Interesting find. The seller is wrong about the 305 being in most Z28s that year. Actually, no 1979 Z28 came with a 305. They all came with the LM1 350.

Nice find, if you can stand the interior colour.

    Reasonable price.

      I don’t pretend to be an expert on these, but I owned a 1978 Z28 and a 1979 Z28. I also studied them quite a bit.

The light green stripes and green interior are factory. I’ve seen a lot of these cars in my time and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a factory green stripe white car. I’ve seen a couple of green stripe/light green paint cars but never this.

Most white cars had orange or blue stripes, with gold stripes being the deviation. This could be one of one.

Yessir, both green exterior paints were sharp but the light green I think I’ve only seen a couple. I’d happily ROC with one. But not this fwiw

Had the same year in Yellow w/ T-Tops & a 4sp, slightly mod’ engine back in ’86. Loved it! But cars, very much like women (no offense to any ladies reading), get old after 6-9 months, having showed all your friends, drove it hard & the novelty wears off, time for a new one! I’d go muscle to luxury, back & forth every 6-9 mos.
Now, married 2nd time just 15 mos, wife drives a new ’19 Caddy ATS she can keep, as I’m in pursuit of a ’70 Chevelle SS 454 M22 DRIVER, not a trailer queen. Still has investment value I won’t lose on & can DRIVE it HARD like they were meant to be!

I had the ’77 version (still had steel bumpers) of this car; exceedingly poor workmanship and indifferent materials. While it handled & maneuvered well, it possessed very weak straight-line and top end performance.

This one seems to be in pretty reasonable condition; price seems a bit high but still in the far end of the ball park.

Weak straight line performance was standard across the board in 1977. The 400 Pontiac Trans-AM was the best that could be had. It ticked of the Chevrolet division because it would whip the Corvette ! De-tuning for emissions and fuel regulations set in ’71 killed performance…1982 Mustang HO came out and power has increased every year since…

This was my Dads car! He won it here in Albuquerque, NM. He won it from John Brooks grocery store. He put the radio in it as it didn’t have one. He also cut off some the checker board sticker on the passenger door because it started to peel.

My Dad owned this car! He won it through a sweepstakes at a grocery store here in Albuquerque, NM.

He cut the checker board on the passenger door because it was peeling. He also installed the radio as it didn’t come with one.

Anyone know the whereabouts of this car now?

    Thanks
