Rare Wooden Dash: 1974.5 Jensen Interceptor

This 1974.5 Jensen Interceptor left the factory wearing a handsome combination of Oatmeal paint with a Dark Brown Espresso interior, accented by a rare optional woodgrain dash fascia. It’s since knocked around as an engine-less project that its owner hasn’t had time to work on, so the roller is being offered here on eBay as a good opportunity to grab a non-rusty Interceptor and build the Chrysler-derived engine of your choice.

While the lack of an engine may seem like a deterrent from pursuing a car like this, you could also look at how straightforward it would be to swap in a 440 – and still be somewhat factory-correct. The body appears relatively straight up and down the sides, and all glass appears sound. The oatmeal paint gets more handsome the longer you stare at it, at least according to me.

There’s that rare wooden dash, which the seller describes as the “full wood dashboard” and notes it more typically found in convertibles. I’m not sure just how rare it is to find, but I do know it will look stunning with that original interior color. Some level of detective work will be needed to determine just what you have to work with, as the interior is strewn about with parts.

This picture gives you more of a sense of just how many spare parts are included, and it looks like a significant haul. Hopefully, the interior surfaces haven’t been damaged. The Interceptor comes with a clean Arizona title, and the current bid is to $6,500 with the reserve unmet. You can hit Buy-It-Now for $10,995 if waiting isn’t your thing,

I know these are rare cars only in that you don’t see them much anymore and kudos to whoever had the presence of mind to protect that rare dash by utilizing a plastic storage bin. It looks like the rest of the car is literally in the car.

Great project. Don’t remember what rear end these had but you could put any engine/transmission combination in it and have a nice driver. The couple I’ve seen personally were pretty basic machines so whatever you want to do should not be that difficult.

For only 10 grand more than a finished car is worth, and lots of personal labor, you could have this car done. 6500, well, maybe. 10,000? Nah.

Well worth getting a peach like that repaired and renovated can be sold for a lot of money. It is sad that a work of Art like that INTERCEPTOR has been ungaraged and just used for storage. I wish I could afford it

Has anyone swapped a modern “Hemi” into one of these? That would be my choice if you were going to go with a modern motor. There was a company in hte UK that was resto-moding them with LS swaps.

These are cool cars, they give you the “ye olde worlde” charm of something like an Aston but with at least some hope that the car will run once in a while.

$6500 is pretty decent, the $10K buy it now seems like a a lot for all the work, though if its not rusty…….

Just my luck, I’m sitting on a low mileage 440 with 727 transmission. Engine has maybe 5000 miles on it. And get this, the gguy who rebuilt engine works for a a drag racing team here in SoCal. Its got headers, Edelbrock carb and valve covers along with a bunch of other stuff. Here’s the kicker. It’s in a 1978 Southwind moyorhome that’s basically thrashed. Roof leaks badly, etc. Wish I had funds to buy the car. These are great Grand Touring drivers.

This might actually be an interesting project. There is one of these running around here (I saw it at a car show) that has a 340 in it. It looked perfect and apparently the AC and power steering worked, too. But be aware, these things were HEAVY.

Restoring this car would be a huge gamble. $10k is a ton of money to pay for a basket case Jensen with no motor. Several of these cars, running and complete, have sold recently on BringaTrailer in the $15-20k range although pristine versions have sold in the low $30s. Getting this car to a 3- for less than $30k all-in does not seem likely and if there is any rust (hint:there is), you are easily into the $50k+ range. Now, if this is your 2nd or 3rd Interceptor and you already know how to build them, then this would be a great project since it will be cheaper to buy a new drivetrain than it would have been to restore the old one. Still…$10k with no Rover or Mopar drivetrain is just crazy.

If I had the room I would buy this for its BIN price, put a Chrysler injected V-8 in it and give it whatever else it needs, and drive it forever. I’ve had one and they are great cars.

What is it about the pile of parts that would make a person think that they are spare and not the ones needed to reassemble it?

Neat cars but to be worth any good money they have to be original.

      With the 440
