READER AD: 1966 Chevrolet C10 Suburban Survivor

What Makes It Special? This 1966 Suburban has a clean title in my name, documentation going back to 1990 and it’s original California black plates! The original rockers, firewall, inner fenders, and floor are the best I have ever seen in a ’60s Chevy truck. It has had one repaint paint and the body is in great shape as well. It has the numbers matching 327 V8. It has the Custom package, automatic transmission, and deluxe heater. Original steel wheels. All the gauges – amps, temp, oil pressure, gas, and speedometer still work.

Body Condition: The body has that patina look that is going crazy. It is super straight. The only serious rust is on the front fenders. The rest of the truck, well you won’t believe it until you look at the pictures. You won’t find a better original body for this price.

Mechanical Condition: The 327 V8 runs and the rest of the mechanicals work as they should, so you can easily drive this truck. Currently registered in my name.

While this Suburban has the look that the patina crowd is into, I honestly think this one deserves to be restored! It’s going to need some rust repair and a lot of interior work, but it’s a well-optioned truck and really is straight. Scott R doesn’t say anything about the AC system, but I see AC components under the hood and that 327 was the largest and highest output engine option in ’66. That combo should make this a nice truck to drive and has to add a fair amount of value. So, would you give this Chevy a full restoration?

These things are practically indestructible! With regards to the AC, if you look closely at the photos you’ll see Scott has replaced it with a very impressive size downdraft swamp cooler, which along with this very cool analog SUV would be most welcome in my garage too!

A guy I lived with in college in San Diego (1969) had one of these. He was a surf dude from Oxnard. On the way to school one morning he made a sharp, fast left hand turn and I fell out onto the pavement. I was asleep. Found out the meaning of road rash. No seat belts in a 1963. Cool truck though, lots of good times at Pacific beach.

Dang, I love my 01 Suburban, but this thing is fantastic. I’m thinking my Wife, might not understand, but, what a blast this truck would be. Truly seems like “All the Hard Work, Has Been Done “

It’s a weird market; nowadays one seem to have to pay MORE for a squarebody in similar condition…

Just a note from a 66yo Fla-Boy. No AC = turn the page 🙂 Swamp Units may help out West, but work against us is we try to use ’em in my state. Funny (not🙂) but the first place my eyes went was to the AC compressor and I saw immediately that there was no belt. Gong!
    Cheers to All…

That makes sense, Steven. FLA humidity +swamp cooler = a rain storm INSIDE the truck…
And another problem: if the windows all fit tightly and you WERE able to fire up that swamp cooler is there a possibility of creating a vacuum inside and suffocating???
Perhaps that’s a question better suited for a structure professional like Fireman 🔥 Dan!!!

Fun to see these again, my old man had the GMC version but the V6 didn’t have enough oomph to pull our campers. Many building contractors and painters used these, and few survived. Don Garlits used one to pull his dragsters all over creation,( note extra blowers on the roof) in fact, almost drowned in one in the swamps of Georgia coming home one night. Cool find. What, are those “speed holes” in the air cleaner?

Speed holes? I think so too, Rube- nobody did the “air cleaner top flip” til later i don’t think did they?

I was wondering about those air cleaner holes too. Maybe an attachment that has since broken off? As far as the “P” word this ain’t really got it…looks like amateur shade tree repairs and surface rust — not consistent with the “spray a clear coat over it and be done” crowd. Looks like paint overspray on the taillights lenses which probably need replacement anyway. And no mention of where the rear bumper went (?)

bigdoc, a swamp cooler uses recirculating water that runs down pads on the inside of it this cooling the hot air passing through from outside. A typical a/c uses refrigerant. Grew up in Texas with swamp coolers. Not the best, but better than nothing.

I had a 66 at one point. It had a 250 inline 6 with 3 speed column shift. It was a good vehicle. Timing gear slipped so I gave it to a friends kid, he got it running and drove it for a spell before dumping it somewhere in Oregon. Swamp coolers are water based coolers that can either use ice water or pumped water for cooling. My dad used the home versions in his Northern California farm house. His were very large units that had a water line connected to the well water, and let me tell you it kept that house very cool on 100 plus degree days.
    God bless America

Great truck and if it’s as clean as he claims it’s worth $9000!! I replaced a rear floor in a one of these!! I think it was a 65!! It was a lot of work and there’s a lot of metal there to rust!! If it’s clean and you are in to these trucks you can’t go wrong!!
