Reader Sighting: 1966 Plymouth Barracuda

1966 Plymouth Barracuda

From Dutch B. – I was driving down a side street in Des Plaines, Illinois today and I spotted a very distressed 1966 Barracuda S. It had been sitting there for a long time – the tires were almost flat and the outside was rusting in many spots. It had what was left of an old flame paint job on the front and chunks of body filler ready to fall off in the back. The plates had expired in 2012, but it had a current city sticker on it. The dash was covered with notices and other items proving it was still a registered vehicle. I suspect this was to prevent future tickets and towing by the city. It had black buckets and a center console with an automatic. The inside looked just as worn as the outside. No one was home at the house, at least they did not answer the door. Since the plates are from 2012, I bet they are tired of saying “its not for sale” to everyone who drives down the street…

Too Bad for that Cuda as the Illinois salt will finish it off quickly. I have a Mopar friend who took me outside in to the country here north of Kansas City while I was restoring our 70 Mach1, what he showed me was disturbing. He took me by a farm out in no mans land that had 6 to 7 early Mustangs coupes and fastbacks one was a Shelby sunk deep in to the mud with weeds growing all around them. He said never go up to ask about the cars as others have and they get a profane tongue lashing about coming on to his property asking about his cars which are never going to be for sale and to get the hell off his property. Terrible what some people will do just to be controlling.

Fer shure! There’s a lot of mental illness wrapped up in car hoarding.

This would make a good feature on the site…reader sightings of cars along the street etc. Not that I’m trying to put ebay out of business…

Nope MH that’s just typical Chicago area vandalism.

One option to go with this one is to build a 60’s gasser. Leave the body just as it is and add the front axle, big motor, 4 speed, and slicks. The weathering is already done.

While this one is obviously in rough shape, if the emblem on the front fender has not been added on, this is a relatively rare Formula S car with 235 hp, special suspension etc. It would therefore make a nice car to restore, although it will be challenging to get anywhere close to the restoration costs back (as is typical, with rare exceptions).
