Ready For The Beach? 1992 Jeep Wrangler Renegade

What happens when you take an off road-capable Jeep and send it to an outfit called “American Specialty Cars” for upgrades?  Well in 1992 when body kits were all the rage, ASC replaced the stock fender flares with a body kit that is, well, different. Jeep gave the name Renegade to these Wranglers and sold them in limited quantities. These stand out today and if you’re interested in one, you can find this one in Dale, Texas here on eBay.

Jeeps are built to be repairable since they get torn up going off the pavement. But instead of replacing a fender flare you’d have to replace half of the body kit on this Renegade! Maybe you could repair it and repaint it if you are good with fiber glass.  You know, the only thing that I can think of that this body kit is good for might be driving in the sand just to keep it off the driver. Anyway, this unique old Jeep is equipped with the 4.0 liter inline six with a 5-speed and 145k miles.  The seller says that the brakes don’t work and neither does much else, so you’ll have plenty of weekend projects to tackle before cruising on the beach!

Speaking of projects, this Jeep has some serious frame rot! There are kits available to repair these but it might be better to track down a nice YJ frame rather than try to repair this one.

That interior is surprisingly inviting so you wouldn’t have to deal with the interior yet. Warm weather is just around the corner and this Jeep looks like a lot of fun with the doors off. Just don’t drive anywhere that might damage the rare body kit on this Renegade!

I’ve had a two of these, a White one, and a Black one. .The black one was lifted 4″ with 35″ tires. It sure looked more proportionate. Beware, those flares can hide a lot of rust.

With as many wranglers that they’ve made, I see a parts car here. And I’m pretty sure the “Renegade” was a sub model of the Wrangler independent of the cheesy body kit but I could be wrong.

Hopefully the local recycle yard accepts plastic. If they ask you “paper or plastic”, you know what to say.

The square headlights gave a description of the driver.

Some of my friends ask me why I got an Ford Bronco and I told them you can throw anything on them and they look great. Compare to this thing I can’t understand why some one did this to a Jeep. Plus a girl at my church asked my sister who truck that is and my sister said mine and now they bug me about asking her out.

This is a factory Jeep that is much sought after. I don’t see the issue with the title that the seller is worried about.

Flat fendered one yr Renegades most don’t even know about, including the dweebs on BF

This dweeb is certainly aware of them – I remember when they were new. This one sounds like maybe it’s one that should be sacrificed so others may live. They haven’t caught on with collectors yet.

I remember these new also, was driving my first showroom new vehicle at the time – 1990 Wrangler Sahara. Remembered seeing the first one in 92 thinking what have they done ! Blah

betcha the rear frame rots away,( if not already ) like all YJ & TJ Wranglers from 1987 – 2006.

I always laugh when I hear the negative square headlight comments. Would like to see someone tilt them into a diamond pattern, just for _hits & giggles. Just saw one today that was revived after a multi year slumber.

Square headlights would seem to be the least of the issues with this full-scale “Barbie Goes To The Beach” abomination.

Being a huge fan of the stock Wrangler, I don’t care for this one bit. I actually liked the square headlight Wranglers. And they all rust in the frames, even the ones here in Colorado. Fixing or replacing frames is a big deal and “patch jobs” rarely last long. Too bad because it would probably run for quite some time.
