Ready To Drive: 1961 Chevrolet Corvette

1961 Chevrolet Corvette

While it is not the most wild of vehicles, this 1961 Corvette does have some small modifications and could very well be a green mean machine! It has a Buy-It-Now price of $39.995 with the option to make an offer. The listing claims the price has been reduced. There is no VIN or mileage listed, but the title is clear. It is located in Bellmore, New York and you can find it here on eBay.

The 350 cubic inch V8 that resides under the hood is not original to the car. It is connected to a Borg Warner T-10, 4-speed manual transmission. Together, they do help the car run and drive and the car has made a few road trips in the last 2 years. The seller does say that the frame is solid and doesn’t show any signs of rust. They also note the tires are on mag wheels and are in good condition.

Inside, new seat covers and mats dress up the car nicely. The black and green combination look great together. The seller notes that two tops come with the car. Another thing mentioned is that the hood has a small burn on it from a backfire in the carburetor. The original chrome has been removed on the side of the car and replaced with 1962 chrome trim. However, they still have the original trim and it will come with the car.

The car has been repainted Pontiac Green and it is suspected that it was done over 40 years ago. It might not be original, but it appears to have held up well. The seller also notes that the front end has been lifted ever so slightly and they hint that it was done in the ’70s. With those two aspects, it does give the car a bit of an aggressive look. Since it is a turn-key enjoyable car, this one should be on your watch list, especially if you have been looking for a convertible for summer cruising.

40 large..woo hoo pricey but what a cruiser. That Poncho Green with the torq thrusts is right on the money. Good luck to the new owner, Drive it like you stole it!

“Verdoro Green” – a portmanteau of Spanish ‘verde’ (green) & ‘oro’ (gold) was a popular Pontiac color in the late ’60’s. It was OK on a LeMans or Bonneville.

    Not on a Corvette.

I like everything else about this car but the color is jarring to me. It could be because the most iconic ’61 of all time was John Mazmanian’s maroon metallic drag racer.

Worth the $$$ if you like the color.

Somebody has done more to that car, than just remove the 61 chrome, and replace it with 62 chrome. On 61’s, when you remove the stainless trim from around the cove area, the fenders are smooth. 62’s have a peak molded into the body, around the cove. I’m guessing it’s had a 62 nose and doors hung on it.

Nose high, 68 Pontiac Verdoro Green, black vinyl on the hardtop, black spoke Torq-Thrusts, it really is a throw back to the 70’s. Actually it looks a lot like the way my 62 looked, when I bought it.

I wonder if the tach works? Early Corvettes had a mechanical tach, driven by cable off of the back of the generator in 61, and off of the distributor in 62. Since the car’s been converted to a alternator and a later GM HEI distributor, there’s no way to drive the tach, unless the tach’s been converted to electric.

I like it, but then I’m partial to 61/62 Corvettes, though I think mid $30’s is probably a little more realistic.

There are brand new Corvette compatible tach drive HEI’s complete with ignition wires listed on eBay for just over $100.

True, but that doesn’t look like one of the new tach drive HEI’s, it looks more like a regular 70’s GM HEI distributor.

61 is my favorite year of Vette and the green and choice of wheels is spot on. More green cars!

      Agree 100%.
The changes from stock mean it’ll never be original or restored.
This is the one to drive & enjoy without worry of damaging your perfect priceless garage queen

I’m still trying to figure out what this poor `61 Vette ever did to deserve such a hideous color combo. Seriously; late `60’s dark green with a black vinyl top?! Please….somebody…ANYBODY…..buy this `61 and give it the TLC and a frame-off restoration it deserves! And crape off that vinyl top!!

Wow! I think I know this car from all the way back to the late 60’s. When I saw the picture it reminded me of a car I saw all the time back then. But figured can’t be. Then I read the listing is for Bellmore NY on Long Island, this puts the car in the right location. The car I remember was in Wantagh NY which it the town right next door. A guy who went to my High School owned the car, can not think of any names, too long ago. If I had the money I buy it, always liked it, maybe just maybe it is the same car. Very cool

It used to street race against it from the Wetsons on Old Country Rd and Wantagh Ave, was also at Old Country Road Burger King at Rt-135. in Bethpage. It was pretty quick as vaguely I recall. I remember it because of the green and vinyl hat on it. I ran it with a Poppy Red ’63 Impala SS 327 / 4 speed called Wilde Cherry.

While not perfect, it will make a good weekend cruiser or even a daily.

A curious choice of air cleaner for an engine that’s already had at least one backfire through the carburetor🤔

I’m usually a stickler for original colors on old cars , but I really like the Pontiac green on this Vette . I would get the hood fixed if possible , replace pitted chrome parts , powder coat the ram horn manifolds and go cruising !

I love it, a real vette that will get miles and smiles, lifes too short, don’t tie it up in a garage spending $$ making it into a car that your scared to drive and have fun in.
