Ready To Rescue: 1971 Chevrolet Corvette

The seller of this Corvette purchased it from the original owner twelve years ago and it hasn’t moved out of their garage for the last seven. The engine is claimed to have ran good when parked, but the body is in primer and needs some reassembly. Perhaps they sanded the painted off and then discovered out how expensive a professional paint job costs? Whatever the reason, this more Corvette needs  new owner who is willing and able to rescue it.Especially if the 60k miles showing on the odometer really is correct. It’s located in Norwalk, Connecticut and is listed here on eBay where bidding is currently at $3,550 with a couple of days left.

Paint jobs don’t have to be expensive just have to find the right place. Got mine done at a shop 7 years ago for $2500, still looks like it just got done, and that was fitting new bumpers on also. People think it cost me $10,000 or more. I got estimates as high as 12g. Just have to shop around and look at their work.

    Why is the primer purple?

    Hasn’t moved in 7 years… I wouldn’t drive a purple vette either.

If it ran when you parked it, than why did you park it?

I would say this car has nice lines… but I can only see one side…so, it has a nice line.

Why did it need a paint job? With only 60k miles on it and a garage it should still shine? What or who did you run into?

    At least it’s not on a trailer…

Paint jobs have gone up quite a bit in the last few years due to environmental regulations. Would sooner buy a car that needs mechanical work than a paint job.

If its going to be a driver, hang some visqueen in the garage and paint it yourself. I do. I’m not a professional, so what I enjoy it! This is what the hobby is about doing what you can, and learning new things. Just saying!

The confusion about wildly varied prices for “paint jobs” comes from the lack of definition of what a paint job is. On older vehicles depending on condition approximately 60% of the restoration process includes body repair and preparation for a topcoat. Many people like to throw the body repair in the same category at the paint and then complain of the cost of refinishing when the bulk of the cost is incurred with body repair. So unless you are starting with a pristine example that just needs a new topcoat, of which VERY few older vehicles are, most of the true cost of paint work is actually body repair to prepare for paint. Material costs for a true high end urethane topcoat can exceed 4000.00 easily if you are restoring a vehicle. Also plan on 80 to100 hours minimum for prep, mask, spray, and buff on a very clean older car and you can see that is starts adding up quickly. Bargain paint work can only be had through individuals with minimal overhead using economical materials. Although it can be…… sometimes that is not such a bargain.
