Ready to Rod: 1931 Ford Model A

1931 Ford Model A

This 1931 Model A looks pretty rough, but the original 4-cylinder engines runs and the seller is asking $5,500 or best offer. The fact that the engine runs is nice, but I have a feeling that most of the potential buyers would want to drop a V8 in it anyway. I’m not really sure what I would do with it, but the idea of owning a simple car like a Model A is a good one. If you agree, this one is located in Yuba City, California and is listed for sale here on eBay. There are many routes you could take with this one, but a full restoration may not make sense. But, what would you do with this ratty Model A if it were sitting in your garage?

What would I do? Probably shoot myself…or set fire to the barn. Ha.

I kinda like the look now. No fenders or running boards. Throw on some numbers and roll it as an old school race car. Too many lowered restored perfect cars out there.

Spot on. This is how they all started out… but nobody ever left ’em like this. Nice, even patina that proves it’s always been together, no doors in primer or anything. I love it – LOVE the original wheels, and the engine sounds plenty healthy for getting groceries and out for a malt on Friday nights, all summer long.

I disagree. There are too many cookie cutter SBC powered “old school” hot rods out there. Nice Model A’s are always a crowd pleaser. Parts are cheap and this would be a great car to learn restoration skills on.

I’d want to restore this also, and repro parts should not be a problem, but you would certainly learn EVERY restoration skill on this one, that’s for certain! ^_^

I’d go full-resto too. So-Cal has enough parts available to keep the rodders happy without adding another “real” car to the pile.

But if I were to find a Rajo conversion for the engine while looking for fenders and other original goodies, I’d be sorely tempted.

Its a rusty car worth about 2500 max some one trying to get rid of a large amount of take off throw away parts an a non matching frame and impossible body

This is just a chassis and running gear. None of the sheet metal is useable. The extra panels are a help but you could get a better body easily. I think the price is too high for a starting point.

I vote get some fenders and get it in safe driving condition first and do the ‘rat rod’ flat black paint. Then i would drive it around on short jaunts while working on it and finding some good/better sheetmetal for the bad spots… ENJOY IT while getting it ready to do a nice resto on for driving regularly…

See Charlie Yapp @ Secrets of Speed. Amazing what can be done with an “A” engine and not at absurd costs.
