Recaro Seats Included? 1979 Pontiac Trans Am

Whether it’s a car that you like or loathe, there aren’t many sadder sights than seeing a classic left to slowly sink into the dirt and leaves. This 1979 Pontiac Trans Am is a good example, and it’s a car whose glory days would seem to be well behind it. Located around Cairo, New York, it is listed for sale here on Craigslist. The owner has set an asking price of $1,800 for this poor Pontiac.

The owner says that the Trans Am doesn’t run and that it would be suitable for either restoration or parts. It’s potential as the former would have to be called into question, as it looks as though it has been sitting in its current, damp location for an extended amount of time. That isn’t conducive to finding a car with solid floors, but I have seen cars in worse situations turn up a surprise or two. If you consider this purely as a parts car, then there is some potential there. I agree with the owner that the majority of the bolt-on panels such as the fenders, hood, trunk lid, and doors all look like they are in reasonable condition. The car also appears to have been optioned with tinted glass, and this also looks to be okay. The listing gets a little vague in one spot, but I get the impression that not only does the car include the original front seats, but there might also be a set of Recaro seats in there as well. If this is the case, and they are in reasonable condition, then that starts to make the deal look more promising. As for the state of items such as the engine and transmission, your guess is as good as mine on those. What I will say is that the car has to have been parked for a reason, and it is quite possible that it is related to some form of mechanical malady. I could be wrong, so that would be a question worth asking.

The true viability of this Trans Am as a project car would be impossible to ascertain in its current location. It would need to be moved to a better location so that a full assessment can be made. Assuming that it is beyond help and that its ultimate fate is as a parts car, then it may well be worth the asking price. Especially if there really are a pair of Recaros included in the price.

I live about 20 miles south of this car!! If anyone is really interested in buying this car I will go check it out for you!! I don’t think I’ll get underneath it unless it gets pulled out of there but I can at least look in the trunk and maybe more depending on the seller!!

Please excuse my ignorance, but what are “Recaro Seats”?

Recaro is a seat manufacturer whose seats frequently appear in performance models from various manufacturers.

Particularly associated with the Trans Am because several Trans Am special editions had them in the early to mid-1980s. But this car wouldn’t have had them stock.

I wonder how many people drove by it, stopped in and asked if it was for sale, and got the reply “No way, I’m gonna fix ‘er up someday”.

I’m guessing there are some critters living inside the car. Just don’t understand why someone couldn’t take the time to take some interior pictures ? ? ? I have a friend that has around 40 cars on their property and refuses to sell any of them.

These are hot poop cars with the shiny dash , the silver bird interior was really rich( to me) thay handled, To me the pontiac looked better 68-70 and the Ta looked better than the comparable Camaro, except for the new Camaro, the new Camaro chsllenger and mustang really looked like someone cared, what the hell happened to the new Gto….. that thing looks like s#%*, rant over

The new GTO was produced before the whole retro craze and was produced to be judged on its own merits. The reason the challenger, Camaro, and mustang are loved is because they are just reproduced clones of a body style already proven to have worked

Maybe it’s like the automotive version of Captain America and it’s being preserved by the mud it’s sitting in.

It either has the original or Recaro seats. It cannot have both because Recaro seats never came on the 1979 Trans Am. They did not appear until 1981 – on the NASCAR Special Edition T/A.

If I were seriously interested, they would have to pay me to take it. And they would have to help dig it out of the dirt. They were great cars, but this one leaves a lot to be desired. Still at $1,800.00.
