Red Sleigh: 1970 Pontiac GTO

Pontiac sold over 40,000 GTOs in 1970 and this is one of them. The GTO is located in Tustin, California and is listed for auction here on eBay. The car has 1 day remaining in the auction and is currently bid to $8,000 after 29 bids. The GTO has been sitting for a long time and is in need of a major restoration. The seller states that the oil looks milky and, even though the car runs well, the buyer should consider this when making an offer.

The base engine in the 1970 Pontiac GTO was a 350 horsepower 400 cubic inch V8 engine. Optional engines included the 366 horsepower Ram Air III 400 cubic inch engine, the 370 horsepower Ram Air IV 400 cubic inch engine and the new 455 HO engine rated at 360 horsepower. The 455 engine was a D port head V8 and different from the HO 455 engines offered in 1971 and 1972. This GTO appears to have originally been painted Cardinal red and it is riding on Pontiac Rally II wheels. The vinyl top was removed but a PHS report should show how to restore this car to its original build sheet.

The interior is mostly complete but is sun baked and dirty. The dash is cracked and the interior will need restoration or replacement. The car appears to be a low option GTO with manual windows and door locks. The car does have air conditioning and an automatic transmission. The seller states that the quarter panels will need replacement and if the car does not sell, he will keep it to restore during his retirement.

The back window is missing and the seller states that it will need a new roof panel. This is not going to be an easy restoration with all the metal work that is needed. This GTO was listed previously on eBay back in November and did not sell even though the bidding reached $6,600. With the higher bids coming in now, the GTO should sell this go around and find a new home that will put it on the road.

The price seems reasonable. Needs a ton of work but it could be a cool car.

It looks like my Brother’s GTO that supposedly had an electrical fire and burnt back in the 80s.
