Roller Only: 1965 Pontiac GTO

1965 Pontiac GTO

This GTO has an interesting look to it! I’m not sure whether to call it patina or if it is something all its own. This is one find I would want to see up on a lift before bidding, but I guess there are a few guys out there willing to take a risk as bidding is already over $4k! That’s even with it lacking an engine, the transmission and a title! Are you up for being a high roller and throwing a bid in on this project? If so, you can find this roller here on eBay in Jonesboro, Illinois.

1965 Pontiac GTO Interior

I know early GTOs are in demand, but can this project really be worth much? Restoring it is going to be seriously expensive, well at least if you do a complete restoration. I guess you could leave the exterior rough, clean up the interior, find a replacement drivetrain and make it a unique driver! I don’t think that would appeal to everyone, but unless you have a large budget, I’m not sure it makes sense to try to do a proper restoration.

Let’s say you buy it and decided to either restore it or just do the bare minimum, you’ll still have the major issue of titling it. Without a title, you can’t exactly use it on the road. The seller says they can help you get a title, if you’re willing to pay them. I always love when sellers claim getting a title isn’t an issue, if that’s really the case why haven’t they gone to the trouble of getting a title? Is it because they know they won’t be able to flip it as quickly, maybe they don’t want to eat up too much profit or perhaps it’s because they know you have to jump through a lot of hoops to get it done? I don’t know, but getting a replacement title certainly isn’t impossible, but it can be a big pain and you might end up finding out the car was stolen.

1965 Pontiac GTO Project

So this brings me back to my original question, is this project really worth much more than $4k? Decent examples with a clear title can go for as much as $25k, but would you be able to make this a decent, drivable and licensable car for $20k?

This is a prime example of a cool car that has lost much value without the engine.
To me this is when you get a 2005 gto and add as many parts as possible.
    Leather, gauges, engine, suspension, brakes.

Sounds bad but this is not a rare car.
Unless you can find a 421 SD then make it look period correct.

This beauty is going to cost some $$$ to repair not including a engine and trans. That rust hole near the lower rear window on the drivers side is what probably caused trunk damage and I’m sure theirs more hidden. The seller is right “Parts Car” but even at that bidding is already too high IMO GTO opinion. I love the 65 to 67 GTOs just not this one and I’ve had one 65 and two 67s and the rear window rust is the kiss of death for the trunk area.

Fix the structural and suspension, drop in a motor and trans, and drive it as a rusty sleeper. Kind of like the Monte Carlo from Tokyo Drift only cooler.

Without more more imformation about the floors, trunk and frame, it’s anyone’s guess how much money it would take to get this back to driver condition. But, as always, I am hopeful someone will take it on.

The look is “rusty refrigerator”. This would be so cool with some kind of monster turbo diesel in it.

Sell it to Gas Monkey so they can stuff an LS9 in it and get $75,000 with the rust. The Hellcat engine in the Dart went for $68,000 plus10% at the Barrett Jackson. That is almost $75,000 for a rat rod because it was on television. People wonder why nice cars cost so much, and then you witness nonsense like that. Why waste the time on all the details when you can butcher together something and make more for doing so. I’m sarcasticly ranting of course! Someone can save this car, but with GTO prices hovering in the twenties for decent cars, not much in the means of financial incentive.

I couldn’t agree more. And people think the P car bubble is nuts! If anyone ever doubted the power of the greater fool theory the old car hobby today proves it conclusively.

    Incentive?
How much would a new Camaro sell for
$30K + could you build a GTO for the price of a loaded SS
5 years from now the GTO would be 40K and the camaro 20K
    40K minus 20K add smiles

Unless the bubble breaks. Then in five years from now the Camaro will be worth 20k and the GTO will be worth 15k, if you’re lucky. Eventually all the boomers will have all the cars they want and then they are going to start selling them all off. It’s the law of supply and demand. Once the boomers start selling them off to finance other retirement toys then the bottom is going to drop out. Does anyone else remember the 90s when the boomers hit their mid life crisis and drove the prices up until they needed the money for their kids college and had to sell the collector cars off. It feels like Ground Hog day, all over again.
