Rough Super Truck: 1991 GMC Syclone

Even in rough condition, the GMC Syclone pickup commands good money. As one of the fastest road-going vehicles when new, the Syclone and its SUV-twin the Typhoon quickly cemented itself into sports car lore and gave GM some momentary hype for creating a semi-bonkers hot rod with no apparent purpose other than to embarrass Mustangs and Camaros. The Syclone listed here on eBay has plenty of needs but is still drawing strong interest with a top bid of just under $10K.

The Syclone seen here has 71,000 miles and still runs and drives. I can’t think of a better backdrop than a storm rolling across the plains for promoting a brute truck like this. It’s hard to determine why this super truck is so banged up – note the incorrect (or at least unpainted) rear bumper, missing arch trim, and sloppy tonneau cover – in addition to surface rust blistering the fenders where the flares should be.

The interior is slightly better, but you can still see the tell-tale signs of modifications – like the gauge pod mounted to the A-pillar. This is a common ailment of the Syclone and Typhoon trucks, as they respond pretty well to modifications, and of course, where there’s boost, there’s temptation. Whoever buys this would be wise to de-tune the truck back to stock condition, both for reliability and future values.

Not much is said about the engine, so there’s lots of unknowns here – particularly around the modification question. Now, I don’t see any obvious signs of under-hood tampering other than the stray yellow wire, which looks sorely out of place. Regardless, if it runs and drives and you can own it for less than $15K, I suppose it’s worth a roll of the dice. Would you gamble on a hot-rod pickup with no history?

No thanks. I passed on one in much better condition last winter for $15k…only caveat is/was engine pulled & partially disassembled due to knock.
Best to find a nice one for under $25k. Not too tough to find with some patience.
Wound up buying a Typhoon with 60k in very nice shape for $10.5k instead.

Always wonder about true miles on something like this that had 57k in 2007, consistent registration history, and a title “correction” and repossession in the middle — especially if the truck had been partially stripped sometime during that period. These are amazing trucks but not sure this one is the one to start with. As poseur said above, it might very well be worth waiting on one with a solid history and all it’s right parts.

I think it’s kind of cool as is. I’d happily fill the bed full of doors under that sloppy tonneau.

I think that if it runs well, I would put some steelies on it, make it more resemble a regular S series pickup truck, & blow the doors off of those oil burning “boy racer” type cars, just for fun lol. I like it!
