Running V8 Project: 1962 Chevrolet Impala

1962 Chevrolet Impala

This 1962 Chevrolet Impala hardtop coupe is a really quite a car for a shockingly low price of $5,850 by 16 bidders. There is no reserve on it either. There is no mention of whether the car has spent its entire existence in San Jose, California, but that is where it currently resides. A VIN is notated, the title is clean, and the mileage is listed at 81,483. You can find it here on eBay.

The 283 cubic-inch V8 will start up but the seller has not tried to drive the car. Hopefully, the Powerglide transmission works well. One can only hope the brakes work as well! There is not a lot of information beyond that and unfortunately, there are no photos of the engine. They do say the engine bay is solid but do not provide photo evidence of such.

Photos of the interior show it needs some cleaning, a few replacement parts, and some reupholstering, but there is a lot to work with. There are also photos of the floor, which looks solid. In the listing, the seller says the headliner is still attached to the ceiling and there is only one photo, which is upside down, that shows that to be true. The seller says the trunk pan will need to be replaced. There are no photos of the underside of the car. Parts of the body do need work because of rust and there are a handful of photos that show those areas. It is described in the listing as well.

1962 Chevrolet Impala

Maybe this model is not as desirable as other Impalas. Maybe there is too little information and photos. Maybe too much money needs to be put into this car to make it safe and show worthy. Or even still, maybe not enough eyes have seen this listing. One thing is for sure, the price is not a deterrent. For what you are getting, this car is a great price, even with all the unknowns. If you are into affordable cool classics, then hopefully you just might find this car worthwhile as I do.

Looks to me like this may have been a flood car at some point. There is a lot of rust on this old girl :-( If nothing else, it would make a good affordable parts car.

I,m like you Blue. Looking at the car all over. It looks like water has been high on it. The Radiator guard is in the trunk . Everything looks like muddy water has been on it. If it has. Someone will have alot of work ahead of them . I,ve seen cars in alot better shape for alot less. Plus look at the door panels. I,d say water seperated it. I,ll pass. Even looking at the outside of the car. It looks like muddy water has been up around it.

While the floors seem fairly solid, there’s a good bit of rust repair in store for whoever puts in the top bid. The interior needs everything replaced though the dash doesn’t look too bad. It would have been nice to see under the hood, too. It has the potential to be a very nice car but it will take a good bit of cash and a lot of metalwork.

Those look like 1968 Impala hubcaps to me.

Those are 1968 Impala wheel covers. I have a set of the correct ones somewhere in my basement, if anyone needs a set.

Not sure on rust but looks honest for the price. In Cali it shouldn’t be hard to get that price – popular car.

All vinyl was not an option.
I have restored a few 62’s and cloth was standard.
Also this car is not an original California built car as it doesn’t have the one piece bumper which were on California built cars

I can understand wanting to make some money on a barn find, but geez…can you at least wash the car instead of just hosing it off? Get the crap out and make it presentable. AND, there is no reason to have upside down pictures on ebay. All that would turn me off immediately if I was looking for a 62.

Remember, not everyone is computer savvy enough to know how to turn pictures around when posting pictures. I can’t tell you how many times I posted pictures here & they turned out upside town. I don’t know how to fix that. The person posting this ebay ad might be as much of a cave person as I am lol. When it comes to technology, I am smart enough to realize I am a moron lol.
Whoever turned my pictures the right way, and I assume that would be someone who is a site administrator, thank you lol.

I agree with you Brentton. It would take a substantial number to get this one straight but if you intend to keep the car there’s no reason not to spend the money. Obviously this model was not as desireable as the bubbletop but who cares?

Probably not an original California car as it does not have the one piece bumpers that I think were on California built cars.

The ’62 has a special place in my heart… My Silver convertible is one of my “kick myself in the butt for selling it” cars. Black interior & top, 327 4-speed. This one’s a little rough, but priced accordingly.

Typical California car body not bad interior trashed buy the sun!! The interior is a big expensive but the rest is all elbow grease!! Eastwood makes a rust kit to freshen up a car with floors like this!! Well as long as they don’t dissolve when you clean them!!!

I remember one of the 64,s my friend had-409—-4 speed. We raced a 64 Plymouth –426 hemi—4 speed. We passed him racing top -end. Then when they raced at take off. They were close until the Chevy caught 3rd gear and it was it. He had several 62-64,s. He had a 64 Impala rag top. White with black top. Straight out of the body shop with new top and paint.Totaled it that night. All because he reached over to change the tape.hahaha
