Rust Free Survivor: 1973 Plymouth Duster

Ikey Heyman sent us this Craigslist ad for a 1973 Plymouth Duster that looks to be a survivor. The Duster is located in Reno, Nevada, and does not appear to have any major rust issues. The engine is said to be numbers matching and still runs and drives strong. The car can be examined here on craigslist. The seller is asking $6,000. With a total production of 228,012 cars in 1973, the Plymouth Duster was a popular two-door fastback coupe.

The odometer is said to read 97,000 miles. The dash, steering wheel, and door panels show sun exposure and fading. The dash is badly cracked and does not look repairable. The front bench seat is covered by a blanket that is likely covering well worn and cracked vinyl seat fabric. There are not any really good pictures of the full interior but the car appears to have an under dash air conditioning system. The backseat doesn’t look too bad.

The Duster is equipped with a 318 cubic inch V8 engine backed by a three-speed 727 automatic transmission. Plymouth rated the 2 barrel equipped 318 cubic inch V8 engine at 150 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. The car appears to have power steering and power brakes. A shiny new Summit Racing air cleaner adorns the engine and the air conditioner compressor is seen mounted at the front top of the motor. Does the front bumper looked turned down compared to the front end or is this how the bumper was mounted from the factory?

The gold paint is faded and the body panels and doors have several dents. Some of the original decals and stripes are still legible. The car is equipped with aftermarket chrome wheels. The rear passenger tire appears to be low on air. The design of the 1973 Plymouth Duster was changed up a little from the prior year to include a new hood, grille and taillights. To accommodate these changes, the driver and passenger fenders were also modified. This body style was kept through 1976. This car is a good entry point and enjoyable driver if the parts are available to replace the dash.

Good project potential, but it’s priced like a small bumper 70-72, not a 73 and later.

Yep nice breather..how much air in the front left tire ( sorry I had to) someone probably dropped the pressure in the right rear for more traction..I’m sure it’s a peg leg differential 🤣👍

Unless someone put one in which I would doubt because of the mileage, the transmission would be a 904. Only the 340 A bodies came with 727s.
The bumper is slightly tilted, but the 73 bumpers were still bracketed in the front, so its an easy adjustment .
The fenders are all the same from 72 -76 , the only difference from the 70 and 71 are the marker lights,; other than that they will bolt right up .

Its a really rust free V8 car , depending on how it runs , I’d say the price is in the ballpark.

Over priced for what it is. Front bumper is bent down from obvious impact on that corner and will require more than a simple adjustment. Most likely will need a new bumper.

I’m sure those sheets are there to protect the like-new upholstery.

I’d guess the front bumper has been bumped a bit too hard. I own an original 340 and my bumper isn’t rolled down. Might need new brackets.
