Saab Stash: 1968 Saab 95 Wagon & More

Some owners were disappointed when Saab switched from their two-stroke to a V4 engine. It was more conventional and smoked a whole lot less though. This 95 wagon is for those who like four strokes. It is located in Chico, California and claimed to be in good shape. The seller does not provide many details, but the best part is that they are asking $1,000 obo and have four parts cars available. Find them here on craigslist.

We have no idea if they are complete or what condition they are in, but if you are a Saab enthusiast, this could be quite a bargain for a stash of parts. Thanks to David C for sending this one in. Can anyone identify the year of each car?

“4 parts cars available also” Not sure that means they are included in that $1,000.00. Any way this is a pretty cool find.

It looks like the light green and the black Saab 96 are rare monte carlo versions.

the red one must be about a 68 because it has side marker lights front & rear while some of the others only have a side marker in front, these must be around 67, then the light green black & white wagon have no side markers so I would put them at 66. the earlier 2 strokes had only the center grille but not the side ones. I had a friend with a 2 stoker, fun car that handled well & was quite nice, very solid tight cars.

I’m amazed at how few people use the side marker light as a way to spot pre- and post ’68 cars. Good job!

Upside: A treasure trove for the Saab fanatic
Downside: A dead brand that will likely not come back

Upside: Cheap entry into the Saab world
Downside: Bring a 2-level car hauler with a diesel tractor

The side markers:are an added factor to determine year but not proof.
    For 2 reasons:
1 the customs office made or importers were made to add them when they did not need it (1967 manufacture and before/lack of proper information).
    or
    2. the importer got away without (adding) them when the customs office wasn’t aware of the requirements …..(or conversion company slipped it by the customs office).
I’ve seen it plenty on Gray market Mercedeses that to this day drive around with ‘illegal’ Euro bumpers and Headlights.
Except now nobody cares anymore because of the 25 year rule……..

I remember these gray markets Merc’s, people bought these high end models because they had nicer bumpers / lights, performance etc.& they had the $’s to do it. You never heard of people bringing a Saab gray market. I also remember the US mandating the factories to install side markers in 68, these were not an add on, because the car had to be painted with the holes predrilled & the wiring in place.

I dig these…….but I don’t have enough steam left to take them on.
Something about the styling just speaks to me.

    Radish…..nice to read you back………:)

on these model Saabs the two chrome strips were an indicatin that it was an Monte Carlo GT the lite green and black both have these chrome strips , also the lite green one my have a monte carlo name plate on the top of the front finder . I had several 2 stroke saabs but never a monte carlo , they cost about $ 3800 compared to $ 1899 for a regular sedan . The last Saab I owned was an 1968 Saab special it had the 850 cc 2 stroke with oil injection , four speed trans on the column and I think disc brakes on the front , the car was offered with a lifetime guarantee to the original owner on the motor , mine was stolen and crashed and burned with 3000 k on it .The last time I saw it it was a crispy critter in a junk yard . replaced it with a 1968 ford Cortina GT w/ an twin overhead cam Lotus motor , thats another story !!

I THINK YOU COULD MAKE ANOTHER DRIVER OUT OF THE FOUR PARTS CARS. I WOULD BRING THE OLDEST BACK TO LIFE .I THINK THEY ARE GREAT CARS .I HAVE A FRIEND WHO IS A MECHANIC AT A SAAB DEALER AND HELPED ME BUY A NEWER CONVERTABLE FOR MY DAUGHTER WHO DROVE IT FROM NY TO TX 3-4 TIMES.HER HUSBAND NOW USES IT FOR BACK AND FORTH TO WORK CAR IN HOUSTON.I WOULD LOVE TO DO A REBUILD ON ONE OF THESE TO GIVE TO MY DAUGHER AN OLD CLASSIC TO GO WITH THE NEWER ONE.

a saab monte carlo is to a saab 93 or 96 what a shelby gt is to a stock mustang . the monte carlo was equiped with an 850 cc two stroke engine with 3 carbs one for each of the 3 cylinders ,the exhaust was a little freer than stock , disc brakes 4 speed transmission on the column ,later models had oil injection vrs throwing in a can of saab oil to every 6 to 8 gallons of gas, inside were the nicest recaro bucket seats tach ,and rally gauges time clock etc, wood rimmed steering wheel ,extra lucus driving lites and a larger capicty windshield washer fluid resevior. the engine output was 60+ hp compaired to 42 hp . also like I stated the double chrome strips on the bottom of the body. I used to drive and ice race these cars in the late 60S. Iam not an expert just been around lots of two stroke saabs.!

remember the Saab dealer in my lill town of 3,000 in the early 60s. Saw the 2 to 4 stroke conversion. Like Wolwo they hadda go upscale to cont. sales/profit in this country. Too bad. These were great lill cars and (2 me) out competed the left coast import econoboxes. Rather B flooded w/these (& their possible evolution if things were different) than the Pacific ones & what they’ve become.
