Same Owner for 46 Years: 1965 Dodge Dart GT

65dodgedart

Scan your local used car lot and it becomes apparent that more consumers than ever before are trading cars in after just a few years of ownership. Either we’re slaves to variety or the cars themselves just aren’t that enjoyable to own for the long-term; whatever the cause, cars like this 1965 Dodge Dart GT here on eBay are unusual for being with the same owner for more than 4 decades! After 46 years, the owners of this Lemon Twist Yellow Dart want to spend their retirement years traveling, so they’ve listed this highly original and well-optioned Mopar with an opening bid of $9,500. The list of repairs and enhancements may deviate slightly from the car’s showroom configuration, but the repaint in as-delivered colors and suspension refresh were sensible maintenance items to address. How many of you have owned a car for the long haul?

The longest I held onto a car was a1968 Firebird convertible – 22 years! The next closest car was a 1991 Nissan 300ZX – 4 years. Everything else was under 2 years… One of the cars I regret selling the most? 1988 MB 560 SEL with 90k miles. I was moving to NY and sold it to a friend of the family who promptly wrecked it…

    Nice car.
My wife still has her 1967 Sunbeam Alpine she bought new in October 1966. 90,000 + change miles. A true one owner. I started a re do on it but lost interest when she did. Got the engine, trans and seats out, but not much farther. She just wants it gone as there is no interest in it at all. Longest vehicle I’ve owned is my 1985 Jetta diesel. Bought it in 1990 from the original owner with 32,000km on it. Now has 544,000 km and still going. Just can’t kill it.

Where is your Alpine located? Any pictures, price. Here is my 73 Camaro, owned it 30 years.

I’m guilty of holding on to cars for the long term, and love hearing about others. Sometimes we have had to move, and firing up the old car to move it becomes a moment. Family videos it, and takes pictures. Just makes the car more of a part of the family. This one is great. That’s a long time to keep and care about a car. I’m sure the decision to sell it was tough.

I like the car okay. However, I would hope you bidders/buyers check the story out before you leap.

I think this one is a little longer. 1930 Chevrolet bought new by my grand dad. 26k original miles. I did a frame off on it in 2007 before he passed away in 2012 and then given to me. Even though I haven’t owned it for it’s 85 years of travel, it’s been in my family.

I bought my ’70 Corvette Convertible in 1984. Sold it last year. 30 years goes by pretty fast.

That Dart is really cool. I’ve had my 1966 Microbus Deluxe since 1993, 22 years this month. Bought it from the second owner with 90k miles on it. Had been eyeing it for awhile, so one day just knocked on the door to ask if it was for sale. Other buses have come and gone, but this one is my keeper. Still running the original engine, now at 153k miles. The owner’s manual has the VIN and engine number in it. Also have a bunch of neat period accessories in her. Stewart Warner model 8335 gas heater, night mirror, 6V AM/FM radio with an 8-track. Have upgraded to dual port heads and dual 40mm carbs. Can’t count the number of people that have asked if it was for sale. Not in my lifetime!

Once ubiquitous and always cheap reliable operation, thousands of this era’s Darts served LOTS of folks very very well. So am not personally surprised at all that this one has maintained its usefulness to them for that long. Longest ownership for a car i still own would be the 41 years i’ve had my 1964 Thunderbird Hardtop, bought for high school service in 1974, yikes…
