Save A Racer: 1962 MGA Race Car

mga-race-car-side

This 1962 MGA was raced at many of the major tracks including Laguna Seca, Lime Rock, Watkins Glens, and Sears Point between 1980 and 1988. It needs to get back into shape, but will hopefully be out on the track soon. The sale includes a clear title and log book. It is located in Greenville, South Carolina and is listed for sale here on eBay with a BIN price of $6k. Thanks goes to Jim S. for the submission!

Other than the engine, the car looks to be in good shape. That will be a fun project for someone.

How could this not be the most fun you have ever had?

Too many changes that have to be undone..in order to be Vintage acceptable. Cars that were raced in the 80’s are not competitive today, and with the front flares and big rear bubble flares, the car is not vintage acceptable. Could be a good beginning, but you can probably buy a track ready car cheaper than when this is done…….. and probably have some vintage history besides.

Nice project but I’d rather have the E Type!

It would make a fun auto cross car.

Unfortunately, it still takes 8 shop hours to R&R the clutch and flywheel…

I’m with Dave. This racer isn’t going to be good for most uses now, unfortunately. It has been modified for an earlier era and may only be useable at some open class competition like autocross where they allow you to run wot you brung. The seller is doing a hard sell here, but hasn’t provided the crucial information that Dave has given.

It would cost more to change back for the road than a nice driver would cost, and then it’s the old story: Buy a nice driver and be on the road by the weekend, or buy this and be driving a year or 3 from now.

When you greatly modify a future vintage car like this for a specific purpose, you have to consider that you may be kissing most other uses for the car goodbye.

Drop a small block V8 in it and have a blast with it.
