Sitting for 37 Years: 1968 Chevrolet Camaro

Don’t be fooled by the sad outer appearance, because beneath that faded paint lies a 1968 Camaro that is surprisingly solid. It will need a full restoration, but at least the next owner isn’t faced with the prospect of replacing enormous amounts of sheet-metal. Located in Denver, Colorado, you will find the Camaro listed for sale here on eBay. The owner has set a BIN of $8,750, but the option is available to make an offer.

The owner doesn’t believe that the orange paint that the Camaro currently wears is original. I tend to agree with him on this and think that I can spot a few small areas which look to be Matador Red. As far as rust issues are concerned, this is where things start to look positive. There is a spot visible in the lower corner of the passenger side door, but that appears to be it for visible external rust. The rockers and quarter panels look pretty clean, although the driver’s side quarter does have a decent-sized dent that will need to be repaired. The underside of the Camaro and frame have a patchy coating of surface corrosion, but the only visible rot seems to be a small spot in the driver’s side floor. The floor on the passenger side has a pretty sizeable dent in it, and this will need to be addressed. Even though it appears to be so solid, I would probably be inclined to completely dismantle the car and do a nut-and-bolt restoration to make sure that any surface corrosion that is present doesn’t get the opportunity to deteriorate any further.

The interior of the Camaro is going to require a full restoration, and with items such as the front seats missing, it will be a case of starting from scratch. How the next owner chooses to proceed will depend on whether they intend to undertake a faithful restoration, or whether they want to wind up with a car that is more to their own personal taste. This Camaro featured a column shift automatic transmission, and even though there are plenty of items that are missing, components such as the original radio and gauges are still present. One nice option that was ordered on this car is air conditioning, so it would be great if the next owner could get that back up and working.

This Camaro was originally equipped with a 327ci V8 engine, and an automatic transmission. The owner confirms that what is there now is a 283ci, and as you can see, it is missing plenty of parts. The motor does turn freely, but the amount of corrosion present suggests that this will probably benefit from a rebuild. Alternatively, the next owner might also choose to sling something a bit more potent into the engine bay.

It’s always going to be the case that after a car has been sitting for 37-years, it will need some work before it is ready to hit the road once again. That is certainly the case with this Camaro, but at least the next owner will be starting their restoration work from what appears to be a pretty solid foundation. If you took this one on, would you perform a faithful restoration, or would this Camaro become something a bit more potent?

    Auction quotes :

” -Vin Number states it should have a 327 V8 but we have found out its a 283 v8 2bbl car (GF code) ”

“We don’t believe orange is the original color.“

Any Camaro fan is rolling their eyes at these “we-take-no-responsibility-for-any-inaccuracies-in-this-auction-listing” jargon…

Two late ’60s muscle cars with the rockers still in them in one week. Amazing. This is a good core to start a build with.

Praise the Lawd, lots of pics and a good description. IMHO this does look like a great core, BobHess. Someone will snap it up right quick. Not cheap but a breath of fresh air from all the hopeless junk we have been seeing. Good luck to the new owner!

Camaros look good with the orange exterior black interior, especially with decent wheels and tires. 283 has gotta go, maybe just a well tuned 350 with a raspy dual exhaust. All sorts of directions these can go.

I’m with Gaspump on this one. Lets face it these cars are all a gamble. I’d never really know until I got it on the rotisserie and blasted it. Then all will be revealed. I could spin the wheel on this car maybe. What’s wrong with a 283? I don’t mean the one in this ad. I’d bring it back stock inside put one of my FI 283’s in it 4-speed 370 rear paint it. If I didn’t spend more than a couple a days welding on it I think I’d come out OK. No more then the BIN $ though. But that’s just me. To each his own. Have fun……………………………JIMMY
