Smoke ‘Em If You Got ‘Em! 1955 Chevrolet

I was more than a little surprised to find the first picture in the ad for this 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air to be one of it lighting up its tires! The seller doesn’t really offer any explanation for the picture apart from saying that the car has plenty of power! It’s listed for sale here on eBay where bidding has already risen to $9,100. You or your transporter will have to visit Palmyra, Nebraska to bring this Coral Pink tire burner home!

The seller seems to be honest about the rust, pointing out issues in the quarter panels and above the headlights but points out that the floors are solid and includes pictures of both them and the trunk floor that seem to prove the point. The seller describes the car as being a blast to drive as-is and I can believe it.

I think the tires have been replaced since this picture; the seller says it has four brand new radials.

Surprisingly, the car has power windows and a power seat that the seller states are original. There’s not a lot else to say about this interior; it would certainly require a lot of work to restore it. Thankfully, everything you would ever need has been reproduced.

The engine, of course, is not the original; this is a 350 cubic inch V-8 and it’s backed by an automatic. There is a new fuel tank and lines, as well as new brake lines. It looks like the seller took care of the safety items before cosmetics — a good sign! So would you smoke ’em in this ’55?

Enough good stuff there to make it worthwhile if bought right. Could be fun.

I have to wonder what’s up with the left rear fender…looks like someone stitched a replacement back section on, and tried to even it all out with Bondo.

Anything beyond making it a (relatively) safe driver — I’d want disc brakes if that 350 is hotter than base-level stock — is going to cost mucho dinero. And I’ll bet there’s a fair amount of rust in areas the seller didn’t picture.

Could be fun. But it also could be underwater fun.

Interesting yes…But the tires in this case are the least of the next buyers worries…This one will need a lot of TLC…Based on the bidding,

This fellow also feels that a good burnout will help sell the car.

Looks like he decided to burn off the old white walls before replacing with less attractive black walls.

Does it still have the original PNDLR Powerglide?

Could be. The powerglide gear box is
like a Timex. It takes a lickin’ and keeps
on tickin’. Guess that’s why someone bought
one that my BIL had for $4,500 back in
2001. The fellow who bought it said that
he was putting it into a drag car. He said he could’ve made an easy $10K if he’d of
waited. It speaks volumes for one of the best trannies of all time.

No, it states it is a 350 with a turbo 350 trans.

If that picture needs an explanation, you may want to choose a different hobby.

If that’s the way he treats his antique cars, then I don’t want any part of it.

The new owner describes it to be in unbelievable condition which I would disagree. I wrote new owner because he THINKS is has a 9″ differential. $200 less than 10k and hasn’t met minimum?

Highly Doubt if a Slip ‘n Slide Power Glide is capable of producing this much power from a stand still, especially with just a 350 Eng.

The original Powerglide ( cast iron case) was fairly reliable behind a 216 or 235 six cylinder. But would not handle any abuse from a V8 ( burn-outs included) The later Powerglides ( aluminum case 1963 on up) were much stronger, but still needed some upgrades to handle regular flogging. The really great thing about a beefed up “‘glide” is it sucks about half as much horse power than a turbo 400 and about 40% less than a turbo 350. Once I put a beefed up Powerglide in my ’63 Biscayne 2 door sedan I no longer had any transmission issues. I started having rear differential failures instead. ( yes, I was an animal teenage driver) Sold the ’63 and replaced it with a ’55 Belair convertible.

My first car! In 1967, I bought a 55 Belair 2 door in two tone green from a coworker of my folks for $50. Six Cylinder, 3 on the tree, and no power anything! Had never driven a stick until I drove it home from its former owners home, about 20 miles away!

Looks to me like that rear quarter was hit, then banged out with a ball pean hammer. Too much work here for me.

Smokin tires is not a good representation for selling points. Keep them clean and pretty, these old cars should be treated with respect.

Get real people. A 55 Chevy is made for smoking the tires. And this one is my favorite color.

I would get rid of that 350. then go with a beefed up 409 or a tri power 427 with 435 hp with a muncie 4 speed manual transmission. Then add a supercharger and a thumper cam. Then maybe side pipes and put a little bigger tire under the rear end with adjustable air shocks. Then take care of the rust and repaint it metallic blue or metallic candy apple red. Then redo the interior and make the windows manual crank and manual adjustable bench seat.

The burn out pic is great. It shows the car can take a licking and keep on ticking. I’m sure the seller is confident of that.

Any potential buyer needs to insist on a new set of rear tires….
