Solid Project: 1968 AMC AMX

Solid muscle car projects are continually getting harder to find. Ones that are complete with the seller not asking an arm and a leg are even harder to find. That’s why a spotting a decent project like this one is somewhat refreshing. Found here on Craiglist and submitted by reader MattR, this 1968 AMC AMX is worth consideration for those on the hunt for a solid project.

The seller states that this AMX is an original X-code car but does not specify if the 390 sitting between the fenders is the original powerplant. While it hasn’t been run since 1993, there is a bit of confidence that it could run by performing a basic service before firing it up. Whether it runs or not is a big consideration as to what the mechanical side of this project would entail and if the asking price is in line. The 390 is backed by an automatic transmission, which is fortunately still there as well.

The interior is fairly rough, but that’s too be expected on a 52-year-old car in need of attention. The pictures are limited but this one at least looks like parts are intact. It’s not uncommon to find projects like this where work has been started and the interior is disassembled with pieces missing. Thankfully, this one appears to have enough in place to begin work and know what’s there and what’s not. Make no mistake about it, though, this interior will require a fair amount of time and money to make it new again.

The first order of business with taking on this project might just be to remove that Corvette-style hood scoop. It’s certainly an interesting addition but looks very out of place. Hopefully, the hood isn’t all hacked up underneath of the scoop. At any rate, this project still appears to be a solid one overall. The big question is the price. Is a solid 1968 AMC AMX with a clean title like this one worth $8,995?

Not sure Mr. Flipper knows much about AMCs. The picture of the interior shows mostly 1969 parts. But the combination of red and black items might be because the same owner who thought an L-88 hood scoop looked cool tried to change the interior colour when he was “kustomizing” the poor thing.

Most of us that really love these cars are too old to take on a project like this. It should make someone a good car when it is done. Chris I agree about the hood. Wish it had better pictures but it looks like it may be a bolt on without any cutting done..

I’ll bet there’s a hole for that velocity stack.

This is the one car I always wanted. The price I think is good for a car in this condition, but the distance (I’m in MD) and the fact it is an automatic are the only turnoffs to me.

Even though this is an automatic, if it was within a day’s drive, I could see taking this one on.

I noticed 2 different sets of wheels on the car, 3 if you count the picture from 1991.
Pics taken at different times, wonder how much work the current owner has put into it.

Really like the AMX. Fast cars back in the day. The A/T holds it back for me.

No problem with automatic for me, I’m tired of pushing clutch pedals, did that for a lot of years. Problem is I just don’t feel like fixing all the things that need done to this one. Sure hope some saves this fine automobile though.

I’ve owned them and I am always looking to have another. To restore these cars you better have a great bank roll and patience because you will need both . Take the hood and scrap it if you want a pure car at the finish line . Automatic does nothing for me so at that point I’m out.
