Solid R/T Project: 1968 Dodge Charger R/T

More often than not, when you find a Dodge Charger R/T project car, you are aware that there is a good chance that there will be some rust issues that will need to be addressed at some point. That’s where this R/T makes a welcome change. Its rust issues are virtually nonexistent, making it a great base for a restoration project. You will find the Charger located in Barnesville, Minnesota, and listed for sale here on eBay. Spirited bidding has pushed the listing along to $21,500, and the good news is that at that price, the reserve has been met.

A previous owner had commenced the restoration of the Charger, and this is as far as he has gotten. Much of the Racing Green paint, along with the vinyl top, have been removed. What it exposes beneath is a lot of healthy and solid metal. Rust appears to be confined to a couple of pinholes in the lower quarter panels, a small spot on the inside of the hood, and the usual coating of surface corrosion on the underside of the car. The owner provides plenty of photos of the floors and trunk, and the floors and pan look about as clean as you are ever likely to find.

This is about to be one of those “good news/bad news” stories, because under the hood is the numbers-matching 440ci V8, which produced 375hp. The transmission was originally a Torqueflite, but there is now a 4-speed manual with a pistol grip shifter, while the Charger also features power steering and power brakes. All of that sounds pretty decent, right up until we get to that bit of the story where I have to tell you that the engine doesn’t turn. Still, the news might not be all bad. By his own admission, the owner states that he didn’t try terribly hard to turn it, so the news might not be as bad as it first sounds. I mean, the news so far has been pretty positive, so it would be nice for this trend to continue.

In spite of what you can see in this photo, the majority of interior trim components are actually present. It looks like the next owner will need to source a dash pad, carpet set, headliner, and new covers for the seats. The rest of the trim items actually look like they might be quite good with a decent clean. One disappointing aspect is that the dash has been cut at some point to fit an aftermarket stereo, so the next owner will have to decide what to do with that issue. Getting back to the positive news, the Charger does feature power windows and factory air conditioning. What you can see in this photo though, is just how clean and solid the Charger’s floors look.

We’ve seen a few Charger R/T projects here at Barn Finds over the years, and almost without exception, these cars have all needed a reasonable amount of work to address rust issues. This one makes a refreshing change because the rust is just so minimal. The fact that it has its original 440 under the hood makes it even more tempting. Whoever buys this Charger could potentially wind up with a pretty impressive car once the restoration has been completed.

Looks like there’s some Real potential here. One of the best Mopars and maybe the most iconic Charger-finish this and go to you FoMoCo pals house when he finishes his Bullitt Tribute…🤭

Lots to be impressed by, but something bothers me about that view from the front- been hit and “fixed”? I’d hit the engine with Marvel Mystery Oil, let it soak for a week, then try and break it loose by hand. You never know, might work.

I had a couple engines in the day that were seized from sitting and I pulled the plugs and poured some diesel fuel in and let sit for a few days. Both times they became free with a johnson bar . I wouldnt do that to a hemi but mine were mostly junkers anyway.
There is good bones here with the Charger but is a awful lot of money to me.

Someone will definitely buy this one. Whether it’s a good buy or not, whether they end up underwater or not will be totally in the hands of the buyer and what they do and who does it to the car.
Car looks like it has potential but it also has issues to deal with. I kind of like the idea of cruising with a Bullitt Tribute, that could be fun as long as no-one got too over enthused to reenact the movie scene.

It fills my heart with joy to see what appears to be a largely unmolested engine bay.

Some day Keith will get over that girl who left him for the guy with the hemi. And might even realize that charger in bullet would have been parked 40 miles down the road before that 390 ford got in 2nd gear. But until then it’s nice to see he stands his ground. Have a nice day. 68 in my mind best Charger EVER.

True words on the Bullitt cars, that 440 Charger could run circles around and out accelerate the mild 390 Stang,, fairly stock 440 in that black beast. Set the Charger up as the villains ride for decades, even the “good” bad guys drove second gen Chargers in various movies and TV shows. The car does have a certain look about it.
This one here has that look even in this worn condition….it’s all in the lines..

    No VIN. No fender tag.

    Another non runner.

This is not worth 10 grand let alone 20.

    What a joke

Can you transfer an auto that has no fender tag or vin # ? If u buy it with no title and no vin # or tag,are there too many problems and cost issue? I’ve seen in Counting cars program they get cars with no title, but don’t say anything about how to get one.I want to get a 1968 Charger R/T .
