Stock 289: 1968 Ford Mustang

This 1968 Ford Mustang is a “C Code” car featuring a 289 V8 and automatic transmission. It remains highly original, right down to the first and only owner’s (prior to the seller) title document from Washington State. The car’s appearance gives off the vibe of being a never-modified survivor, with some minor cosmetic warts to address. Find the Mustang here on eBay with bids approaching $9K and no reserve.

The seller’s description doesn’t reveal much in the way of exotica about the car, other than citing its relatively low mileage (128K). It appears to place the emphasis on luxury, with the more powerful engine; bench seat; automatic transmission; wheel covers; and vinyl roof. Chrome looks tidy, but there looks to be damage to the lower edge of the rear quarter panel.

The interior presents as unrestored but nice; it looks just as you’d expect to see in a car that has enjoyed prolonged use in the hands of a careful owner. It appears the dash remains in good shape and that it retains its factory radio. The Mustang is located in Washington Stare, which helps explain why it has avoided a junkyard fate due to rusty rockers and floors.

The seller claims it runs an drives well, and 289s are ideal engines for a car that’s not intended to be sporting but rather a reliable cruiser that can get up and go when needed. Recent maintenance items include a new cap, plugs, wires, lower freeze plugs, radiator, carb, and more. For a project you can use and enjoy with modest fiddling, it looks pretty hard to beat.

Nice looking survivor. Nice to see there’s no low mileage claims, even nicer to see no reserve. The seller is letting the market decide the value. Will be a great feather in the next owner’s cap. Good luck to both seller and buyer!

In-laws had a ‘68 and made the mistake of having it repainted at Earl Scheib. “Any car, any color, $29.95. No ups, no extras”. Bad job, even painted over the hood turn signals!

That is one of Fords regional ‘specials’. The California Special is most known, but this was the Gold Nugget Special for the northwest region. There would be a little gold plaque with the owners name on it mounted on the dash. I have this very same car given to me by my neighbor I lived across the street from where I grew up. Good memories. Great car. 525 were built, but actual number around 480, and maybe only 200 left.
