Stored For 42 Years: 1967/8 Triumph TR4A

This pleasingly original 196″8″ Triumph TR4A is available here on craigslist and is located in Powhatan, Virginia. The seller is asking $15,500 but as with most craigslist prices that is probably at least somewhat negotiable. The reason I put quotes around the “8” is that it’s actually a 1967 model that was sold and titled in 1968; the one-year-only six-cylinder TR250/TR5 was the 1968 Triumph offering.

One of the interesting things about the TR4A is that IRS, or Independent Rear Suspension was an option in the North American market. As you can see from the witness marks from the original badging, this car was so equipped. The seller tells us that the car was purchased new in Georgia and has not been repainted; that’s the original dealer decal on the trunk (boot) lid.

We’re also told that the car was stored by the original owner from 1973 until 2015 in a garage. Unfortunately, as you can see above, while the paint is original it isn’t unblemished. A good body person might be able to make this right and blend some paint in, though; I’d hate to see the whole car repainted due to this and another bad spot on the hood.

The ad characterizes the car as having a “solid sheet metal and undercarriage,” and I can’t disagree based on the pictures they have included. After looking this car over closely in the pictures, I really can’t fault the asking price. I’ve certainly seen a lot poorer condition TR4As sold for a lot more!

Although 60-spoke wheels are stock for a TR4A, the 72-spoke wheels from a TR6 fit and these have been sandblasted, painted and fitted with new tires. It doesn’t mention them having been trued, though. I’m lucky that there is an excellent vendor and friend close to me in Greensboro, NC that is a wire wheel specialist, but not everyone has that access.

The interior looks great with new leather on the buckets. Although there are no pictures of the engine included, the seller tells us it runs and drives well and is currently insured and driven. Perhaps a trip to Virginia for a test drive is in order for you?

Man, this would be fun on a country road!

Sun shining, top down, throw in some nice pavement curves and you’re approaching automotive heaven!

No pictures of the wooden dash and gauges. These are some of the TR4’s best looking features.

To me the TR-4A is THE quintessential classic British sports car. If I had an extra $15K, this would be mine to share with my brother, who feels the same as I do about them.

Although it’s unlikely, this could actually be a 1968 TR4A. You’d have to examine the emissions control devices and stickers to be sure. I own a ’68 TR4A that was sold new in Manila, PI to a military officer who brought it home with him when he was reassigned to the U.S. ’68 TR4As share a few trim bits with the TR250.

As far as the price goes, I think the seller is very close to the market price. I’ve had several offers on mine, which isn’t quite as nice as this one and they’re very comparable.

TR4 ads should definitely include at least one engine photo, as there are people who much prefer SU carbs, to Strombergs, and a pair of SUs are very pricey these days..

I have owned one of these and used it as daily transportation to work and back in the Kansas City area for 5 years until a huge Buick pushed me into a concrete bridge railing. I had the pleasure of my knock offs pealed the metal of the ladies fenders apart from stem to stern but she narrowed the entire car about 9″ totaling the car
    in the process.

I have had Healey’s, MG’s, TR’s from a 2 to a 4AIRS and this is by far my favorite. This is especially true if you have the overdrive kit installed. Kansas City has miles and miles of tree lined parkways. In the fall it is often like New England’s Vermont in terms of color. Have the top town, The heater on the windows up, the toneau cover in place over the passenger side of the cockpit and take a early morning Sunday drive. The heat will flow over your body and only the edges of your ears will be cold.

Cool fresh air, you can hear the exhaust, engine, tire noise as well as birds, the leaves in the trees move and truly be both warm but in the cool fall morning at the same time. I would love to find another one. They are getting EXPENSIVE especially as compared to just 10 years ago. They will never be E-TYPE expensive but they are at the least a good investment for both pocket book and your soul.

I sold my 1 owner prior to me green California ’66 TR4a that had overdrive, surrey top and new interior and dash for this asking price a year ago, with no body damage like this has.

The seller will need to be flexible, especially due to the time of year. I kept my TR250 that mixes the beautiful body style of the earlier design but incorporates the lovely straight six and its lovely sound.
