Stout-Hearted: 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu

When you look at this 1969 Chevelle Malibu, there’s quite a lot to like about it. This is no trailer queen, and the owner has deliberately gone to the trouble of preserving the car’s original appearance. Underneath that slightly faded paint beats a heart of pure gold. The Chevelle is located in San Antonio, Texas, and is listed for sale here on eBay. At the time of writing, bidding has reached $12,350, but the reserve hasn’t been met. There is a BIN option available of $16,500, and I have a feeling that this is a car that will probably be finding itself headed to a new home at the end of this listing.

The Frost Green (or Frost Lime) paint on the Chevelle looks pretty reasonable, although it does have a number of imperfections to it that gives a true indication of the car’s age. There are no obvious rust issues with the car, and the only rust that is mentioned by the owner is some repairs that have been made to the front fenders. The black vinyl top looks to be in pretty decent condition, while the car is set off nicely by the Rally wheels. There are no shots of the interior, but the owner does refer to it as original, but a bit worn. There may be a bit of restoration work required in there, but the fact that the car has served as the owner’s daily driver for the past 5-years tends to indicate that it might not be too bad.

That original exterior hides a pretty decent secret. Under the hood is a new 350ci V8, and this has been matched to a TH-200-4R 4-speed automatic transmission, while the car also sports a rebuilt 3.55 Posi rear end. The owner has spent a considerable amount of time and money to ensure that the car is rock solid. Judging by the list of work that has been undertaken, it has been refurbished on a no-expense-spared basis. Everything from the front to the rear of the car has either been rebuilt or replaced, and every part seems to be of the highest quality. The other thing that I like about the car is the fact that the owner doesn’t make any outrageous claims about how low the mileage is for the Chevelle. In fact, in the 5-years that he has been using it as his daily driver, he has managed to clock up 40,000 miles without any problems.

It will be interesting to see what our readers think of this Chevelle, and what they would do with it if they bought it. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of doubt that it’s a strong car, both physically and mechanically. Would you treat the car to a repaint, or leave it just as it is?

No, I wouldn’t have the car treated to a repaint. I would, however, gladly spend the money to have it repainted.

I’d want to know what’s going on under that vinyl top. That being the case I feel that I’d want to peel it. And as nice as this car is overall I think that a repaint is indicated.

The buyer states in the ad that he had the top off 5 years ago and that the top is only 5 years old. He has put some nice upgrades on this car like 4 wheel disc brakes and tubular a arms. Looks like a good deal.

Agree on the suspension and brake upgrades but having a new top installed puzzles me. With no vinyl top and a repaint in that gorgous Frost Green hue this little Chevelle would be a hotrod already!

I like the 68 better just because of the different tail lights but I’d take it!!! Looks good!!!

You ruined the look by putting those ugly axx ralley wheels on it.

Twenty lug nuts and 30 minutes will remedy that problem. I’m not a fan of rally’s either, but swapping out wheels is among the easiest changes that can be made to a new purchase.

So long as I knew that there was no rust
under that vinyl, I’d just keep driving it.
Our seller has most everything sorted so
you wouldn’t have to worry about anything mechanical. These were very
reliable rides that served their owners well over the 100K mark with hardly any
trouble at all. Maybe a good buffout will
do ’till you got around to a repaint. Other
    than that, nice ride.

Can’t really tell on my phone, but hope that he kept the 307 emblems on the front fenders to piss people off. Why is that guy from Gas Monkey Garage shaking his hand in the ad? Is that going to entice me to bid more money on the car?

Read the story, Tony. That’s where he bought it.

I’d pass on this knowing that the clowns from flatulent gas monkey not a real garage had anything to do with this car.

Why does everyone who owns these cars think they have to put Rally wheels and white letter tires on them? So ugly. Car looked so much better with the stock wheel covers and whitewalls. Hopefully the seller retained them. No, I would not paint it. Second best year of this vintage of Chevelle, ’68 being my favorite due to a nicer grill and the presence of vent windows.

Agree on the white letters, as for the Rallies what’s really wrong with them? I respect it’s a matter of taste , personally I like them. Rallies were available as OE equipment on most Chevies back then, from Novas to Impalas (and also a couple of Buicks if memory serves me right…?).
It should be noted that when installing aftermarket discs most kits (at least if you want a decent diameter) requires the use of 15inch wheels or larger. Hence going the Rallye Wheel way is a nice compromise while still keeping some OE look to it

Both of my 72 Monte Carlo’s came from the Factory with the Rally Rims. And yes sir, there were Chevelles, Impalas, Vette’s, Nova’s, etc that all had them. I’ve seen them on 55’s and 57’s. They are a uniquely Chevrolet Rim and compliment any Chevy they are on.

Full custom garage with Ian Rossell (not sure if I spelled his last name right) is the only good show on TV. He’s a talented guy!!

Well it must be a generational thing because I also like rally sport wheels. When I bought my 69 Nova new that was a big selling point for me. Keeping the 307 air cleaner top is kind of cool on top of a 350, but it is deceptive. I realize that means nothing to a lot of people but I’m one of those old school guys that believes honesty is the best policy. Nice car.

It’s only an hour from me, I should drive up to look it over, but I won’t because it’s not my choice of next car. Right now my 64 Buick Riviera is keeping my blood flowing, after it probably another Buick but this time it will be 66 Skylark.

Plenty of nice Chevelle’s on this site lately, here’s another one. I like the ’69’s the best, always have, to me they have a bit more of a classic look to them compared to the ’70-’72 models.
I’d leave that rough around the edges look. Plenty of shiny show rides with worrywarts panicking over the smallest scratches. As for the rally wheels I think they are just fine, period correct mags would get my attention even more but that is just a personal preference. It takes a variety to keep it interesting otherwise they’d all look alike which would get dull quick.

Apparently Adam this daily driver will be staying with its current owner.

    Long way from reserve.

Lots of mods which do nothing for me.

And lots of body work. Nada

This was the color scheme for my ’69, except it was the SS396.

Just the sight of this one makes my mouth water.

And it apparently DID sell, as the listing for the bids says “Reserve Met”

      $15,200
