Street Build Gasser: 1962 Mercury Comet S-22

Believe it or not, this 1962 Mercury Comet gasser build hasn’t seen any track time, but the seller feels it could be a blast to rip down the quarter mile in. I can’t say I disagree, as the build details certainly seem to indicate an interest in seeing track duty rather than just horsing around on the road. Regardless, bidding is getting close to Buy-It-Now, which is listed here on eBay for $13,000 with bidding just over $10K.

The patina is perfecto on this Comet, with a nicely aged exterior featuring less than perfect paint. No word on whether this Comet was a genuine gasser back in the day that’s been mechanically refreshed, or a stock car made to look like a heavily patina’d vintage racer. Either way, the final product is very appealing, and the body is said to be nearly rust-free.

Some very modest, “pin-hole”-sized rust is noted behind the rear wheel on the passenger side – that’s it. The interior is outfitted with racing buckets and no carpeting, along with a center console and aftermarket tachometer. The Comet certainly looks the part of a car modified in-period, but a roll cage is needed if serious track time is planned – and it’d be a shame if it’s not raced.

The seller details a very robust build sheet with the numerous tweaks that went into making this Chevy 383 engine into the monster that it is. The crate engine was quickly torn down and rebuilt for better performance, including being bored, honed, clearanced, and cleaned. This Comet is certainly an acquired taste, but looks like an awesome tribute to period gassers.

This is a fake Gasser built for local cruises and car shows. It has not, nor will it ever see a race track unless there is a car show in the parking lot. There is nothing vintage about it, it has a lot of cheap Chinese white box parts.

The way the seats are mounted and the routing of the fuel and brake lines are dangerous. When I worked at the local track, I would have instantly failed this car. I would never sign my name to its tech card.

Steve, that was my first thought. This car would never pass inspection the way it is.

Definitely built to resemble a gasser from decades ago, in the sixties this Comet was probably a nice A to B driver.
Lost interest the second I saw that small block Chevy in there. I like all brands, but puting a Chevy in a Ford product is so not cool. The ultimate insult for any Ford guy.

WHAT? A Chevy motor in a Comet gasser ( sound of tires screeching) Interest immediately faded. Ford made so many cool motors, I’m sure Connie Kalitta could still set you up with a 427 Cammer laying around. IDK, that always grinds my gears, a Chevy in a Ford, for shame.

13k is a steal cause it might cost you that much for a clean body from this era!! This car could not be built for this amount!!!

I thought so TimM, sure, it could use a few things like the brake and fuel lines moved, maybe a better seat mounting, but you can’t build it for that, and the body, the chrome, all look to be in really nice condition, which is a plus, just how many of these cars are still around? other than the minor things, I would make it a dual quad setup on the tunnel ram just for the looks.
